ECU Damage - Welding?
« on: January 17, 2010, 04:44:26 pm »
Just welded up a couple of holes on my sill, disconected the neg battery terminal, then retartedly shut the bonnet which obviously earthed out on neg terminal, thought nothing of it, then done my welding, went to put it back in the garage = no starting!

Looks like i'll need a new ECU..

Only concern is that its had a PSD custom map, whats the likely damage to the chip?

Or would it be possible to extract the binary data from the chip?

Anyone else done this!?

Cheers,

Rich.

what happens when you try to start it?  do the fuel pumps run? is there a spark?

might not be the ecu although it is usually best to disconnect it when welding.

Hmm good point, Just assumed. Fuel pumps defo prime, not checked for a spark.

It almost started the first time, then just died!

Hmm fuel pump primes, starter doesn't turn at all tho:S

Think I better get a tester on it in daylight!

thats not going to be the ecu then, is the battery knackered if it's shorted out on the bonnet?

you need a surge protector on the battery while welding so it will just be the battery that has gone.

Neg terminal hit the bonnet.

Yeah, I've got the whole dash etc out, but still got the interor light ?

Suddenly decided to stop priming!

New fuel pump relay, and a jump start and she's a beat!
