Engine Spec
« on: July 05, 2008, 06:32:46 pm »
Hi all,

In a search for a MK3 I have seen a few standard 1.3 Polo's fitted with what looks like the GT engine. I have seen a few now- so beginning to think this was factory.  Is this correct?  Did they fit it to particular models e.g: genesis,    and is this a detuned version of the GT engine?

examples;

Hi Ronnie,

This engine is coded NZ.
They found their way into quite a few different Polo engine bays, but more often than not they are in the 1.3 Saloon and Genesis models.
They are rated at the same 55 bhp output as any normal SPi 1272 engine, though many seem to think they are more powerful for some reason.
The GT has specific pistons, camshaft as well as Digifant controlled EFI and ignition.
I have yet to really understand why they were ever produced? Nothing wrong with them, but they don't have a specific model niche.

Cheers Breadman.

I wonder if they were a more efficient engine to the standard SPi 1272, offering better mpg.

Would it be quite easy to convert one of these to GT spec?

Ronnie

I think the NZ is pretty economical, I had one in my mk3 saloon that I used to have.  But to be honest, the GT I also used to have was just as good with 40mpg and it was quite a lot nippier.

It's not really feasible to make an NZ fully GT spec as it requires changing basically everything including wiring loom, ecu, cam, pistons, inlet manifold, gearbox.....  The NZ is fairly tunable and you can get them to 75bhp without too much trouble, although I still say you'd best off either getting a GT or a non-GT with very tidy bodywork and converting it to a GT.
