Toothies and the rev limiter.

got in a little pickle last night in the snow that blasted essex, was a huge que on one of the hills in the town cause nothing could get up it.
"small cars like this wont get up there mate" said the guy trying to control things at the bottom. anyway, as i've been on a few uphill classic trials i knew that all I needed was a run up and to keep the momentum on the way up. did so, but while trying to keep the speed up i hit the limiter a few times, know its not good with toothies but wanted to know how bad it actually is for things? as im not an expert, or am i being silly, everyone seems to think the g-lader is a delicate as a wrens egg! wasn't on boost so there wasnt much load, but how bad is it?

not sure, bit if i remember crrect its to do with the internal timing belt inside the lader. is not really good for any car to be hitting the limiter but im sure G's are a little less tough than others.

It'll be fine, but its just not the best thing to do on a regular basis.  The toothed bolts dont allow the the charger pulley to slip when it hits the limit of rpm.

Imagine something spinning at 14000-16000rpm, then forcibly being stopped rotating instantly.  What do you reckon happens?   

I exaggerate but you get the idea.  ;D

Its generally why we have the 8k limit on the chips so its gives you a little safety cushion so to say.   G40 chargers are fairly robust really...  G60s are more fragile, especially on 1300cc G40 engines but outrageously Cool! 8)

the limit of the top bearings I worked out on here somewhere, basically about 6.5k rpm on a 65mm pulley.

ye you might get away with a few 7k rom changes, but i tend not to risk it.

Yeah the top bearing seems to be the limiting factor, the centre scroll end bearings were uprated to 16600rpm bearing ceiling limit (PSD ones AFAIK - Jabba/OE ones were 14000rpm i recall.  I know PSD were looking into 18000rpm bearing ceilings around 2005 but didn't get to far into it, Liam was testing it in im sure. 

My charger just used to blow its seal springs all the time. :(  But was regularly driven upto 8000rpm all the time.

well steve said that they had custom specced top bearings in their chargers, but of the 7-8 psd chargers i've had apart, they have been either skf ones or any random brand.

you'll blow seals due to excessive pressure at 8k

Hitting the limiter gives you a quick peak in oil pressure inside the charger, and forces the scroll seals out, thats the main problem
