you don't need a g40 head mate, just any 1.3 mk3 polo head will do.  Then swap the exhaust valves, valve springs & cam from your head with broken bearing caps over to the new head.

Where you based?
I got a good 1.3 head up in leicestershire, as hayesey said - you would need to swap everything over.
car had done 130k before I took it off, water channels were clean, no rust or corrosion.
If you come pick it up you can have it all for £40 if your interested?

Where in essex have you been? Im from essex too. There is a scrappy in the middle of know where in East Hanningfield. When i was there 3 weeks ago they had 2 1.3 mk3's in there. Im gonna get the lights off them. Next time im there do u want me to look at the engine's? See how many miles they done and why there in a scrappy?

Near Chelmsford there is a vw breakers. Don't count it as a scrap yard though. They have 2 mk3s but they are nothing special (at the moment)
got loads of stuff there though. Quite handy. My mate had a 'spare' 1.3 genesis square back he got with his gt. Took about an hour to get the head off but was in great nic. Wanted the coil pack too but it's gone now
