you just mean the p-clip that holds the wiring to the alternator body?  It's not technically needed for operation of the alternator but I'd leave it on as it stops the wires going into the connectors on the alt from bending and eventually snapping.  VW didn't just put it on for a laugh  ;)  those wires are pretty exposed under there.

There's nowhere on the alternator for it to bolt on, hence it's just dangling.

what alternator is it?  is it some kind of non-original replacement?

I don't think it's OE, in fact I'm almost positive it isn't hence why there's nowhere to mount that wire.

Had a look over the car last night with Nick G, turns out there's a 1V drop between the battery and ignition, so when it's reading 13V it's about right.

Duostyling AFRM was giving it the hump a bit though, it's happier without so I've canned it. Now I need to find another way to mount one neatly, as I've taken up the din slot and cubby hole already.
