A safe bet Pete, but what sort of mileage on it? My first filter change was at 165k on my old G.

what about the lift pump?  If that's worn out maybe the inline one is struggling

fuel filter has been replaced and looks quite new. I shall investigate the lift pump. It only does it on occasions, but embarrassing at the very least at traffic lights!

I'll change the filter tomorrow... but other than than, what can it be??? would a dodgy FPR cause the pump to overwork? it does seem to get warm when whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring and whining

Any chance of a kink or crimp in the fuel line while doing other work? Return pipe blockage?

i'll check connections in the engine bay... its weird as its only really bad stood/at idle.

1. Pipes in engine bay
2. fuel pressure reg
3. fuel filter

hopefully get to the bottom of it!

At it's worst with least demand; starts to sound like the regulator.

Interesting that regs do that. Not heard it happen before, but would make sense.

only thing i can think is that the reg wasn't letting it return to the tank and therefore backing up and straining the pump
