'rules' for breaking a g40 - discuss (tongue in cheek)

you should only break a g40 when

1. it has been in an impact - rendering it unsafe
2. it will require substantial welding to pass an mot
3. it is already a reshell
4. it is lhd - making it non-rare!

any more?

Seen far too many broken up one of late, just because people want to make a few quid rather than do a bit of work to put a neglected or lightly (or even moderately) damaged car back on the road.  If the roof/floor or door pillars ain't bent then IMO it renders a nice project car!  And trust me when it comes to rust and corrosion, Polo's don't get close to Italian cars, so there should be no excuses for a bit of patching up (try owning a Fiat Strada Abarth ???-find a good sheet metal supplier first!!)

But, yes I agree with you boy's there are not amny good reason to break one!!

I agree they never should be broken and scrapped.

Only allowed if its red, owned by a little yellow man who has a work collegue with a massive head and have another G shell doante the G bits into...............

Oh come on, let's be honest here. The G40 is just another humdrum Polo underneath the fancy bits. Nothing about the shell is specific apart from a hole drilled in the roof for the aerial!! Everything else is just bolt on stuff and trim.
Put all the G40 parts into another basic Polo shell and you'd NEVER be able to tell it from a "genuine" car other than checking out its chassis number.

The mk1 Mexicos on the other hand did have a specific "type 49" bodyshell. A bodyshell that was strengthened and modified by AVO to provide an excellent basis to build the high performance Mexico and RS models. The AVO shells were quite heavily modified, and it's not easy to copy them exactly without extensive cutting and welding. Unlike G40's, they weren't just fitted with different mechanicals and trim.
Saying that, if I had a decent mk1 Escort "base" shell and a rotten mk1 Mexico, I'd have no worries about putting all the Mexico mechanical/trim parts on to the base model to make a replica. But then I wouldn't build a standard spec. mk1 Escort Mexico anyway!

Personally I've recently broke a G40, it was a pretty rusty shell. Of course it could have been rebuilt, but not by me - I don't have the time or application. But what makes a G great isn't the shell, it's the running gear. All the mechanicals are going into a nice unrusty Mk2 squareback, which is around 100kgs lighter, and will make it all the more special IMO.

Any car, no matter how far gone is restorable, but lets be realistic. I for one actually live in the real world - at least some of the time!

As someone said before, 'feel free to break it, unless it's the last example on the road'. Mine wasn't, so I'm not bothered.

As Jez says, "what makes a G great isn't the shell, it's the running gear". Putting the mechanicals into a tidy mk2 squareback is a far better idea IMO - that's what I'm doing! ;D
