im going to be fittin my new kevlar clutch along with atv box very soon

looking into lightened my flywheel whilst its available..

wat does a standard flywheel weight

i done some searchin and theres a few post saying that a sachs race spec is 3.8kgs and psd rought 4kgs...

i also noticed that some people have posted only 1kg comes off and in some cases 1.5kgs?

can i lighten the flywheel and not rebalance it if only takin off 1kg? just by using the original vw balancing ??

mark_crox

My mk2/3 one is 5.2kg don't think they are any different to the G40 one.
I sent mine off last week to be lightened and balanced, I pick it up tomorrow so I'll let you know what they have managed to take off.

djtez

aw ok 5.2 ..
so normally a kg off is 4.2.. the psd one is 4.0kgs and the sachs racin is 3.8kgs..

ye mate if you could report back and et me know wat they took off that would be great, lets me know wat a normal engineering shop takes off by rule of thumb.

mark_crox

Well I picked the flywheel up yesterday and it is now a kg lighted at 4.2kg. I also had it balanced and which was a good thing as they said it was quite a bit out.

ah, im looking to get mine to a more race spec..
ill chance it with the 3.8kgs in mind..
sachs racing one apparantly weights that so ...

who knows.. as for balancing im slightly worrieed....

wat would be the down fall off off balance flywheel? slight judder throo revs ?

Personally Terry, I wouldn't chance going too light with the flywheel. The more you lighten it the weaker it will become and the more likely it could fail. Believe me, you don't want a flywheel explosion.
Having a 3.8kg instead of a 4.2kg flywheel isn't going to make any noticeable difference to the way the engine performs.
If the standard flywheel is around 5.2kg, taking it down to 4.2kg is still around a 20% reduction in weight. Safe and well worth doing IMO.

Just under a kilo came off mine along with full bottom end balance and this was done buy a guy who builds plenty of race engines. It still revs very happy.
