hi guys, i was just wondering which gearbox would be the next best thing to fit to a g40, i have a couple of mk3 polo gearboxes that i could fit, just want to know wots best? Also which 1 can u fit a lsd into?   :)

from memory its the 8p gearbox off a normal polo...

You want a late CEG code box (same ratios as an 8P) from a 1994 mk3 polo, if you want to fit an LSD into it.

Avoid mk4 polo gearboxes as these are made of tin foil. If you do use an 8P code, get one from a German built mk2 Polo as these were the better quality ones.

8p is the best bet.  Not all CEGs have bolt on crown wheels, I have a CEG box which doesn't.  I guess that's why you say 1994 mk3 but I'm not sure of the exact date they'd change over.

So do mk4 boxes have different internals then?  What makes them weaker, out of interest?

I'd say 8p because they are easy to find, pretty much any 5 speed mk3 polo or mk2 polo will have one.  But yeah you can't fit an LSD to one.

I have gone off Gaz's experience with gearboxes tbh, he seems pretty clued up on what's best regarding part numbers. Something to do with early boxes have slightly different part numbers indicative of whats likely to last longest!

If anyone has a CEG and wants to know if it has a bolt on final drive or not, post up the full gearbox code (numbers after the letters) and i'll let you know ;)

ah do you know what number the changeover is then?  That's handy to know.

Was a bit gutted when I opened my CEG to find it had a pressed on crown wheel.  Fortunately I don't need it anymore as I have lots of ATVs now.

Change over between pressed and bolted for the CEG's was November 1993 iirc.
