g40 v1...
« on: May 01, 2015, 06:42:00 pm »
Firstly, I am new to this forum and have zero experience of the g-lader setup... be nice!

I have recently 'discovered' a G40 charger at the back of a friends garage. Luckily I knew what it was as he was going to scrap it  :o
It has a radial inlet similar to a turbo, so I think it is an early supercharger. Can anyone confirm this based on the photos...

Unfortunately the scroll is damaged where the seals sit (beyond repair in my opinion). I have spoken to a few UK specialist companies who think that a later scroll would work/fit, but it is difficult to find a spare as these are the parts that usually get damaged when a charger 'lets go'. Any sources much appreciated...

My plan, if I can fix the unit, is to fit it to a non-polo engine. To check if this works it would be useful if I could double check which direction they rotate in a standard application?

Finally, if I cannot get this unit working, I could consider another G40 or even a G60. So that I can check it will fit in my engine bay, does anyone know the dimensions of G60 compared to a G40? From a bit of browsing, I think it is simply 20mm longer to increase the displacement? Are the diameters the same?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Rich

The picture isn't working, or might just be my works computer...

I was under the impression all G40 chargers were the same, even the early mk2 versions, the only difference being they just had 1 inlet instead of 2.

But you'll often find chargers in need of a rebuild cropping up on here and eBay so always worth keeping an eye out there.

As for direction, if you turn the charger so the pulley faces you, the charger would rotate in a clock-wise direction when running.

Right then. First things, picture is fixed and should now be working. Sorry I was posting whilst at work, so couldn't check that the pic was working.

Interesting. I'm glad to hear that the only difference should be the single inlet, so I should be able to use standard rebuild kits and displacer (if found!). Also, great to hear that the rotation is clock-wise. This means it should work with my engine plan  ;D

Does anybody know the dims of a G60 charger?
Could anybody tell me some info about their stock G40 setups please, such as pulley size, rev limits, max boost, compression ratios, head chamber volumes, etc... This should allow me to work out a suitable first guess for my pulley size.

Thanks!

looks like a mk2 charger, interesting thing to find in the back of a garage!

PeteG40 will know best but I'm fairly sure all the internals are the same as the much more common mk3 charger.

its a mk2g40 charger.  The apex seal strips are apparently bigger from what i gather so parts arent readily available i dont think -

not sure about using a later scroll - perhaps - or there's the possibility of a machined g60 scroll like in the g45 chargers.

stock pulley size is 76mm and 65mm with the stock crank pulley is about as small as is safe to rev with the bearings (approx 14500 rpm)
