Mk1 1978 Derby - RWD 2.0 16v (Team Guru)

1978 Mk1 Derby (mid-engined 2.0 16v)

Having followed the original build of this car by Team Guru over a decade ago, we bought it from its previous keeper as a non-runner in a pang of nostalgia. We gave it some love, and got it running again - taking it for a play on track at Blyton Park back last December.

Now that its a runner we've had to admit that we're far too short on the time needed to do this car justice.

Powertrain:
Mid-mounted 2.0 16v 9A engine on B2 Passat subframe, 014 4-speed gearbox. G60 Digifant Engine Management (supplied with 3 maps), KR Camshafts, De-cat manifold & bike can exhaust silencer. Bosch G60 sensors (inc. injectors) inlet manifold modified 16v/G60 with G60 throttle body, Ross Machine Racing fuel rail and pressure regulator.

Also included a spare KR cylinder head, Audi S2 turbo exhaust manifold and wastegate, Nissan Pulsar GTi-R throttle bodies, and two cylinder head gaskets. (Gives you an idea of where the project was originally heading!)

Due to the fitment of the Passat B2 subframe, more modern longditudinala 20v/TFSI engine conversions are possible, although most of the parts are there to boost the 9A lump. Later Mk3 Golf GTi ABF engine will also drop in if you’d like more naturally aspirated power!

Chassis:
Bespoke coilovers (front units based on Polo, rear on Passat), running standard 2.25” springs. Mk3 Polo G40 steering rack and G40 rose-jointed steering arms. Modified Safety Devices rollcage, additional bracing and harness bar, re-enforced rear to chassis legs/subframe pickup points.

Underseal removed from floor- body in very good condition! Passat front subframe used to mid-mount the engine.

Exterior:
Solid Mk1 Derby shell, no rot. WL Motorsport Gruppe H Berg Cup GRP wheel arch extensions, and first generation Mk1 Polo lamps/grille. De-bumpered. "Team Guru" logos applied by original builders. It'd be fair to say that the paintjob is more suited to a racetrack paddock than a show and shine competition. Boot is fully removable with pin/latches for access.

Interior:
Fully stripped, bucket seat mounts for drivers side (stock passenger) with harness pickup points, sparco steering wheel and Mk3 Golf gear shifter, Austin Mini hydraulic clutch.

Mk2 Polo interior wiring harness, steering column lock & stalks, external lighting and instruments/clocks etc. This had been fitted by a previous owner to get the car MOT'd with working wipers and lights etc. Rev counter, brake lights, wipers etc. all functional for track use.

Brakes:
239mm vented front, golf rear disc conversion- ATE blue fluid all round.

Wheels:
13"x8" Minilite with 195/45R13 Conti Sport tyres with good tread (please note these are 10+ years old, one wheel has a weld repair). Also included are a set of 14" Golf rims used when the car was last MOT'd.

Replacement parts in our ownership:
New Aluminium Fuel tank & Polo lift pump assembly
New Bosch fuel pump
New fuel filter
New fuel lines (braided)
New swirl pot
New engine earths
New Battery & clamp
New fuse box
Lifeline Plumbed in Fire extinguisher
Full engine service: Oil, spark plugs, HT leads, oil filter, distributor cap & rotor arm
Replacement Engine components: New Distributor, New Lambda Probe, New Clutch Slave Cylinder

The car needs to be viewed before buying- it still needs development in some areas, but as can be seen from videos/pictures is complete enough to go on track now.

£3995.

Located near Gaydon, Warwickshire – viewing by appointment only (currently SORN'd)

I will update photos this weekend hopefully with some engine bay and under bonnet shots.

And a link to the video of us shaking down the car at Blyton Park last month:
