Anyone removed the speedo pinion guide from the diff casing before? Just got hold of a spare box and the speedo plastic pinion is missing. Do the later boxes with the electronic speedo part have this pinion, if not can you retro fit them?

it's easy to remove mate, just unbolt the metal nut part that the speedo cable screws onto and the plastic worm gear just lifts out.  Not sure on swapping one from a cable drive into one that originally had an electronic drive but I'm fairly sure it's a straight swap.

Thanks Paul. I'll have a go at getting the guide out and looking for the pinion then ;D

if you need a spare mk3 pinion drive then let me know, I've got at least one or two of them knocking about.

As far as I'm aware, all Polos >94 have cable drive speedos? I've never heard of an electronic one.

at least some mk4s have an electronic one.  I helped pete take an engine out of a mk4 yesterday which had an electronic drive on it, the fitting to th box looks identical but then it has a black cylinder sat on top of it with wires connected to it where the speedo cable would connect to on a mk2/3.

I think this was an electronic hooked up one. No sign of the plastic speedo pinion

I have a spare fooked box i can raid for spares, thanks for the offer though.

i had a spare box and when i undid this and was lifting the cable and pinion thing out the white plastic gear/pinion thing fell into the box but stayed just close enough for me to tweezer it out...thats not happened has it nick?

Thats what i first thought had happened. Had a look with a torch and its not in there. Can see the white plastic speedo drive wheel on the diff though.

Ah that may be right, I assumed we were talking about a mk3 Polo box.

yeah no mk3s had an electric speedo but you said ">94" which means greater than 94  ;D
