Will my gearbox appreciate the torque?
« on: December 28, 2013, 05:51:52 pm »
I'm in the middle of getting my G40 1341'd with a BVH and a K04 - Since this is not really that tried and tested, I have no real Idea of what power it will produce other than its bound to be well into the 200bhp's...

My question is....Will my gearbox be able to handle the torque this setup will produce?

Would it be worth rebuilding my gearbox?

Any other advice?

Adrian

It will just about cope but for how long is questionable. A good quality rebuild will help. Also trying to limit the torque somehow in first and maybe second will help massively.

I would advise a spare lol

You could have it rebuilt but that won't guarantee that you won't kill the box - I am running about 195bhp and stripped 5th gear in March at Oulton park.

Aw man, that sucks. ....why 5th and not 1st or 2nd? Was your box freshly rebuilt?

I guess ill need a spare then, tho none are up for sale atm.

Cheers.

Its going to be 5th because the engine has more potential than the final drive on the box in 5th, 1st and 2nd you can limit the power depending on launch and ecu limits etc .

5th is usually oil starvation due to the box design lacking decent oil feeds to both gears.

1st-3rd generally break with a large amount of power/torque with traction (slicks, LSD etc), final drive bolts also a favorite. A resaon I wanted to try a Quailfe LSD instead of a plate was to increase wheelspin and lift load off the gears... I broke CV joints instead.

I'd guess the 085 box is validated for 150Nm or there abouts, 02J is 250Nm, 02M is 350Nm, I'm in the process of fitting an 02J, due to the 085 being far below what's required for good power and track abuse, as lots of people are now finding!

Ahh, I see. I did come across someone mentioning a 5th gear oil mod. Whether it exists or not.

Dare I ask yoof...how are you going to make a different box fit?

Brilliant info and advice...

Adapter plate, robbing lots of parts from the Golf, and some chassis cutting and a custom subframe, driveshafts etc.

Lots involved, the parts aren't too expensive, PPP will eventually sell a kit for DIY fitment. It's the only reliable way to run 200bhp+ in a Polo, but unfortunately isn't just a bolt on part  :(

Breaking CV joints is better than breaking gearboxes I guess? The repair is eassier and cheaper right?

Breaking anything is annoying- the cost of parts isn't always the issue, if I've booked on a trackday for £200 and spend half the day fitting new CV joints then it soon adds up. Plus I like driving my car, not fixing it ;)

yes I too know the fun of spending half the day at a track day replacing CV joints!  Not to mention the tow-of-shame while the session gets red-flagged that comes before it.

You'd have an easier job of fitting it than me mate!

First adapter plate design due off the plotter this week, will then transfer it to ABS, mock up and see what needs to change.
