Gearbox rebuild
« on: October 11, 2013, 02:17:33 pm »
So the next project on the list is to sort the gearbox, currently running an AHD gt box which makes the car go like a rocket but not great for prolonged driving at 60 or 70mph. Local well thought of gearbox guy in the area quoted £250 which is very reasonable, however its in parts on my bench already so may as well give it a crack:

My research so far has got me Hayesey's guide to change the diff bearings
http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=248.0

and some useful guides on how to dismantle an reassemble the box
http://volkswagen.workshop-manuals.com/polo-mk3/index.php?id=1801

Now having taken this link off one of Taylors topics i gave one stop gearbox shop a bell and spoke to Colin.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171015208053?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648
He couldn't successfully identify which bearings belonged to which part of the gearbox

he also sent me in the direction of this link
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171103370339?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D171103370339%26_rdc%3D1
but wasn't totally sure if the 6n gearbox had that many similarities.

I asked Colin for the SKF and Timken part numbers, he couldn't find them. Not a good start for Colin

When i spoke to VW Barnsley (JCT 600 in York have yet to realise how to answer a phone) he suggested i pop by and go through the bearings needed.

So i am stuck, i need part numbers for the relevant bearings/seals, but I still dont fully know which bearsings/seals i should be replacing.

So any part numbers or advice would be much appreciated

Very helpful chap. He said in most cases he will change the main diff bearing and selector seal as they are the most likely to wear. but only if they need it and that is typically £125-£150
