Are all mk3 polos the same strut?

Well they're all interchangeable anyway. Had to swap a front 1 litre strut into a G40 years ago, no problems.
As far as a stronger structural integrity for G40s, I don't know,but would put money that they're all the one.

On this subject, I'm doing the same as you James and having some coilovers made by gaz, I've got front struts but it seems that there are two part numbers one for all non g40 bearing housings  for which the part number ends in a (these are the ones I have) there is also a part number listed that is very similar and ends in E but is listed as complete g40 strut so I'm assuming with dampers and springs.
  As far as I'm aware the g40 was 15mm lower than the non g40 range (not sure if this I includes the gt?) I'm unaware as to how they lowered it. They may have just shortened the piston length and or spring length but they may also of shortened the housing itself to suit. So there may be a difference In height.
  If this is the case when you order a -25mm to -60mm kit you could actualy be getting a -40 to -75 kit.

i think it just indicates that there was shortened dampers in the strut.
i have a pair of G40 and non G40 in my garage - il check later on in the week when i get time and report the difference - pretty sure its just the damper inside - the originals used the casing as the damper body - aftermarkets use an insert dont they so it would be the strut which has the part number difference to indicate this

Will be interesting to find out probably just the damper as you say easier to change a damper than a bearing housing.
