Doing my brake upgrade with 256mm set up and 22mm master cylinder, problem is I bought the master cylinder brand unused but from a bloke on club polo. But when looking at it next to my old one it looks identical evan down to the part numbers on the side are the same although they look to be different brands.
Is there any thing obvious I can look for to confirm it's a 22mm one ??

stock ones have 3 outlets and 22.2mm have 4 outlets (one blanked off)

My old one had 4 outlets with one blanked of by a bolt does that mean it was probably a 22.2 mm job ? Do the standard ones only have 3 connections then and not just 4 connections with one blanked of ?

sounds like you havea 22.2 fitted yeah.  Stock ones only have 3

For this conversion, is it simply a remove the 19mm and replace with the 22.2mm? Other than the blanking plug, nothing else?

Yup looks like I've got a spare 22.2mm one aswell ;)

Meant to ask also, use the original polo brake resevoir?

Yup, original reservoir fits with a little 'gentle' push.
