heads up display - is it possible?

Thinking about this after seeing the real old top gear when the BMW M5 was released. Would love a heads up display but how do they work in principal? Is it possible to transplant the hardware into another vehicle?

You can buy GPS powered ones which plug into the OBDII port on new cars, but I doubt they'd work on the Polo.

The OEM line-fit systems are heavily integrated into the vehicle - not as simple as just unplugging a HUD ECU and grabbing the display.
