i have fitted a new rear gearbox mount and im still getting a shuttery clonking nise like an engne mount, you can feel it through the floor just where the rear gearbox mount is. i have even taken it off and refitted it over and over again but still seems to do it. i thnk the noise could possibly be the driveshaft catching the back on the sump. there is definate marks there.

could my side engine mounts need replacing as i think the engine may have dropped ever so slightly causing this to catch.

i phoned vw about engine mounts earlier and they only still do the drivers side mount. where can i get the gearbox side mount or are there better alternatives i can buy

I got mine from GSF or Euro Car Parts - they sell the rubbers on their own for a few quid a pop.

Are the engine mounts secured tightly and are they the correct way around? Is there any sign of cracking etc. anywhere near the engine mounts?

g40chris

no signs of cracks near the drivers side or rear mount havent checked the gearbox side yet but i do have a strengthening bar underneath to stop this cracking

If it makes the sound when you are accelerating (quite hard) it could be the cat (or four branch if you have one) catching the bracket its passes through under the car. If you look underneath you can see the there is only a cm or so clearance between the exhaust and this bracket and when the engine lifts under load it can cause them to touch. thios sends a noise like you described through the car and especially in the area below the gear lever as you are sat in the car?

aint got a cat or 4 branch

it does it at changes of speed. like pulling off, or just after a change of gear. or the same when slowing down as this is when the engine moves. if accelerating hard then it only does it at the beginning. it does do it everytime if i stab the accelerator on and off quickly

This sounds just like the noise and symptoms I recently had and it turned out to be the pipe catching the brace which spans the gap where the pipe and gear linkage travel.

I'd have a look underneath at where the exhaust routes over the cross brace. if you look closely you might be able to see some small marks where the pipe has been catching the brace (it might even be an exhaust clamp). you could grind a bit of the brace away if this is the case, or even better get some slightly stronger and / or shorter exhaust rubbers to lift the pipe a touch more.

will have a look at this on weekend.

got new sump to go on there on weekend anyway so perfect chance to have a look then

ye i had this problem but mine has a cat, i just took the exhaust tunnel bracket off the car and went up the road and the noise had gone, so i ground a little off the bracket and pushed the engin right forward on the mounts. sorted

Could always get a set of the poly engine mounts.

They just replace the rubber bushes and are out of a harder material, should last longer than standard and more importantly reduce engine movement.

They aren't a stupidly hard set up so there is some damping of engine vibrations.

There has already been two group buy's and i haven't heard of any issues yet.

There is a group buy which i am running at the moment, but i want to send off the order and payment to the supplier on Monday, Tuesday at the latest so you would need to be quick.
