Hi there,

newbie to the forum but thought this would be the best place to ask...a few might know me from e38.

Anyway, simple question and i know in theroy it will run, but what im saying is can you run a G40 (all be it with the right chip) with no charger sensibly?

Reason i ask is im looking at buying one which currently has no charger, and i can't aford a new one yet so im wondering if theres any chip i can buy to run it na, or wether the standard chip would be fine to do this.

I assume those of you that drive them daily and had their charger serviced at some point would have had to do this?

Any help much appreciated :)

Also would it run like a dog and massivly overfuel with a standard g40 chip?

yeah it's been done.  Put a smaller belt on one side of the v belt pullies.  Just use a stock chip.  It will run rich on full throttle but otherwise shouldn't be a problem.  You'll need to block off the boost return or fit a little air filter to it.

I bought a G40 that had been run with no charger for about 2 years. I only kept it like that for a hundred miles or so but it seemed to run OK and was on the stock chip. You need to check exactly what has been removed if there is no charger. Some of the parts are stupid prices from VW and second hand is the only realistic option (flexible boost hose from charger to intercooler is about £110 new). You should be able to pick up a used charger for £200 to £400. A rebuild is a similar price so it's best if you can find one that has had a recent overhaul. However, the charger in my current G40 has done 147K miles without ever being rebuilt.
