Really need an idiots guide to set up the gear linkage, in the final stages of a engine re-build & fitting, can't get the gearbox & linkage connected successfully, Haynes manual suggests it needs to be done by a dealership with a template but then also gives instruction on how to attempt it yourself, I've followed their instruction & can only get 1st 2nd 3rd & reverse, The rod that comes out of gearbox with the rubber ball on appears to have 3 positions when moved manually by hand I'm following the Haynes process assuming that the middle position of the rod is neutral???

Also again require an idiots guide for the following picture, I know roughly where this part goes & it's purpose but need some advice on where exactly it get bolted to on the engine or gearbox?

Any help always appreciated

Im sure it get bolted between the starter motor and gearbox.

Dont really need it though. Mines doing sod all as i dont use it as an exhaust hangar. Although the small bend part is for your clutch to rest on. Although your one does not have it fitted.

best way with the gear linkage is to get two people on the job.  One holding the stick in the neutral position whilst the other is under the car sorting the linkage out.

that bracket is just an extra exhaust support, not really needed.
