hey! im new to this... lol hope someone can help!!

I have a Polo GT... bought about 9months ago.. i dont know what all has been done to it exactly apart from a fancy intake system, has the 8000 chip... and... its a little pocket rocket! :D

ANYWAY..   i have recently heard twin 45's run on a mk2 Golf, and i want my polo to have 40's!!

Basically, can anyone advise me on this? everytime i seem to look for ANYTHING for my car, i cannot find any performance parts..

will 40s go on??
can you tell me all i will need? and point me in the direction of where i get all the other bits i need to go with the 40s please? ie manifold, linkages etc?

ANY help will be MUCH appreciated..
THANK YOUUUU :) <3

Hiya,

Well basically your GT is running fuel injection and it's been chipped. This is a very efficient system and indeed makes it a punchy little motor.

There are various complications with going to carbs. First of all, you'll need to strip off all the injection system to go back to carbs (a retro-grade step in my opinion.) then I'm not sure about how much room you have between your inlet face & bulkhead so you'll need a fancy manifold but something long enough to give a decent flow and leave enough room for decent filtering on the other side.

Yep, linkage will change but I imagine you could fabricate something to utilise the original cable and operate the balancing linkage off the end if you're handy.

You'll need to change your fuel pump as fuel injection uses high pressure and carbs run a lot lower pressure. I'm guessing leave the lift pump in the tank then scrap the high pressure pump underneath and run a facet pump & filter/reg in your engine bay.

Buy the best carbs thou can afford. Most 40's are old and they do wear.

Budget £250 for set up on a rolling road and another £50 ish for new jets & emulsion tubes depending on what car they've come off. They might need choking down to 38's on a 1.3 too

And last of all, expect BIG fuel bills. At the minute, your GT should be pulling 35+ MPG. I'd be expecting late 20's tops with a pair of twin chokes on it.

Do it if you're keen but if it's a daily and you want reliability & economy, stick with the well proven excellently tuned & self altering Bosch injection. It must sound like I'm trying to put you off - I'm not - I'm trying to be practical & realistic. My Dad's classic has twin 40's on it and my Mini has a single 45 and there's not denying that they sound awesome!

As the man says, stick with injection mate. I've ran several cars with twin 40's and 45's over the years. Even when they were the thing to have, they were a bastard to set up. Port matching was a must, as was throttle balance and a pailful of tubes and jets required unless you really new what you were doing. Do they sound nice ? Yes, but the swish of the fuel guage needle going down will soon change that.

My mate runs  kR lump (mk2 16v golf engine) in his caddy. switched to bike carbs. it sounds amazing! but like everyone has said, you have to set it up pretty much weekly. never starts in the cold and generally a pain in the ass.
however, if you do decide to do it there's some carbs for sale in the for sale section (funny enough) on here :)

there's quite a few people on clubpolo.co.uk who have put various carbs onto GT engines.
