It's quite a spec. though. Cloth upholstery, steel wheels? foglights and that's not all by a long chalk. If it's never been driven out of Edinburgh it's done 50k at thirty mph which should be most excellent; I don't think.

50k up and down hills when cold over and over. Cobbled streets in some places too. So that's the engine, transmission and suspension probably knackered. hahaha.

I can't see the whole ad, am I missing something? All I see is;

VOLKSWAGEN Polo G40, 3 Doors, Manual, Coupe, Petrol, 1993 K Reg , 50,000 miles, Metallic Black, 1 Owner, Only a 2 Owner Car with Full Service History, We Have known the car its entire life and it has never been driven out of Edinburgh in its life. CD...

Can't see a link to expand further?

I think 4k and the right selling climate and that'd be realistically achievable. They may be pricing it to a collector though, then again I can't really see a collector wanting a G40, unless they know their VW's, in which case they'd probably not be interested due to the price. I wonder if it'll sell and how long it'll take. More interestingly who would buy it and for what use? It'd be a very expensive ornament.

No badges, no foglights as it states. Does look fairly tidy though and it will probably have all the history to go with it. I know of loads of grey G conversions rather than original ones so there arent many about in this colour, especially with this mileage. £6k though is in dreamworld however. A Mk2 valver in similar spec and condition would struggle that amount.

hayesey

quite nice yes, I just don't see how a standard g40 in any condition can possibly be worth that though.  They're obviously overestimating the desirability of these cars.

Unfortunately the Polo isn't widely regarded as a design icon, not even the G40. So as much as we all like them they are still losing money at a fair rate. £6k would need to be something special.

Alex I think G40s aren't loosing value anymore

I disagree mate. Not that there's many for sale to compare and its hard to go apples for apples but I could easily buy the equivalent or better than my first G for less money now.

Andy

Agreed - I think G40s are the cheapest they've ever been! There's a 1341cc one with ticket for £1500 on here, and that's much less than you'd pay to build up the motor. I can remember when PSD first piloted the 1341cc conversion a ratty non-G40 shell with one of their motors in would be worth close to £3k.

Still, it's good value compared to a Mk2 Golf GTI 8v IMO.

my black g40 which had 50odd thousand on the clock got about 3000quid when it was last sold - so that shows you the top end of the market! that was pretty mint too with full history!

as for compared to golfs... the rare low mileage mk2 golfs go for silly money - like 5-6k. but i';ve just been offered a decent mk2 16v 3dr in decent nick for £600 - which you'd never be able to get a decent g40 for!  the g40 market is limited at bottom end by the value in breaking cars - so rare you see a car fro under £1k as you can get £1k for it in bits.  no so for a golf as engines are much more common, therefore so are parts.
