The gears have been running fine and selecting as they should. but yesterday i gave the pedal a good bit of acceleration and after that i have found that 1st and 2nd gear have kind of moved (hard to describe) I thought nothing of it.

I fired her up this morning and i couldnt select reverse gear and the gear stick felt like i was trying to stir treacle in my gearbox, every time i went for reverse gear i kept getting first, and i couldnt get second because the stick wouldnt go far back enough in its recess.

So i have had to drive to work this morning using reverse as first gear and then straight into third gear.

But half way through the oil in the box seemed to warm up as it didnt feel as thick any more and i got reverse back, but now it has gone again.

Im bloody baffled.

Im going to re set the selector underneath, can some one please let me know the correct / or the most proven method to do this as last time i could get reverse and not fifth, and then i adjusted it so i could get fifth and then couldnt get reverse etc..., and i started to get rather mad.

sorry if its hard to understand

Cheers in advance

sounds like the linkage might be loose and moving about.  My only method for resetting it is to get a friend to help.  One person sits in the car holding the stick in neutral position while another is under the car tightening the linkage in this position.

Or it could also be that some part of the linkage has been damaged, you need to get under and have a look

I got pissed off when i was trying to do it and took it to vw and they did it for a few pounds.

The same sort of thing happened to my previous box last year and i took it to a garage to look out. They couldnt get the gears properly and were looking at it for 2 hours.

After that the only thing they reckon it could be was the layshaft bearing was knackered so i got the box reconditioned.

i yurned out that the cage that sits over the black ball was a bit baggy so it had too much play in it before it selected the gears. So i welded in two thin pieces of sheet steel to take up the slack.

It now operates like a good un.

For reference I bought a new black ball bit 6 months ago at about £25 all in from the VW dealers in Shirley/ Solihull
