Keeping it standard?

Hi all,

I've been thinking about this for a while with my G40 but still undecided about what I want to do....

My G40 is currently standard and at first I assumed that was the way I was going to keep it.  Just replacing everything for new bits so it was a really good example.

The problem I have is you seemed to get pulled in all directions for things to be changed i.e. I'm going to have the charger rebuilt but ooooh wouldn't it be cool to get it rebuilt to stage 1 (or whatever they call it these days).  Ok that's just me but then looking at the airbox, I read a post on here re it being restrictive and it either means you change for a filter or do some funky thing with the pipes.
Then if you've done something to the engine do you need to think about whether the exhaust is retricting it?  Oooh and it looks better if it's just lowered 40mm

I know it's totally up to me what I do with my G but looking for others views on 'standard' etc just to get an idea.  The other problem I have is my other G40 was reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally quick.  I spent all money on the engine (and not much else!!!) so I know the potential they have.

You see so many 'modded' G's these days, wouldn't it be nice to have a standard one? But also wouldn't it be nice for me to enjoy driving the car?

So comments/views welcome.  Do any of you have what you would call a 'standard' G40 but have changed some of the bits?

Sorry this is so waffly and long, hope it makes sense!

Many thanks

Gemma

Gemma,

mine is stock - as close to standard as possible (within reason i.e. not buying vag front shocks at £300 each) and I love it!

My last G was modded, but every mod reversible so i could put it back.

what you need to do is to get two G40s!  ;)

Seriously though I can't think of another way of satisfying the need to make a g40 go faster as well as having a nice stock one.  I'd love to have a nice standard g to just drive about in too but I can't afford to run three cars, not when I spend so much on my track day one anyway...

well its all down to personal preference, like pete says if you are going to change things, keep all the originals incase!

Im currently in the process of putting mine back to stock, modified and faster is good, but all the other problems, extra work that comes with it, i just want to be back to some pleasant driving!

Two G40's ... that is the way forward!!!

I think my plan will be to do everything on it which needs doing to keep it standard and then decide where I want to go from there.  My biggest decision is charger will be done next month and I don't know whether to get standard rebuild or better one hmmmmmmmm

There is something a bit special about keeping it stock, esp if I am going to keep it forever ;)

Thanks for your comments all.  It's good to bounce ideas around!

With regards to keeping cars standard, what are peoples thoughts on wishbone conversions, you could argue that they should have come from the factory with wishbones.

Standard is definately a much more pleasant drive. The best solution to this, as others have said is to have two G40's. You can pick up a G40 fairly cheap these days, although it will likely need a bit of work doing.

I'd love to have two but as I can only have one my intention is to keep it at least looking standard. My car has toothies and a GT inlet etc and I'd like a ported throttle body but its all stuff you can hardly notice to look at it. I certainly wont be putting an aftermarket exhaust on it. As Pete did with his everything is reversible on my car and I've kept all the standard parts to put back on it too. Only expetion to that rule is that charger I suppose.

I do have pangs of lowering it with some nice wheels on but I do like it looking boggo standard too.

Standard's for pussies  ;)

Been giving this a lot of thought, and decided to change mine back to standard bodywise.  Going to source original side trim and spats and put on a origional grille.  However, i'm keeping it lowered (40mm).  Engine is upgraded - Jabba 4 chipped and pulleyed, decat coming soon, and want to keep it that way.

I ditched the Atiwe alloys and went back to the BBS G40 alloys.

Mine started out as a GT, so it's a long way from standard, but I've found myself going that way too, replacing some older mods with OEM+ tweaks to give it that standard feel again. Most recently the wheels - I bought some 14" Speedlines as track wheels, and I've ended up using them all the time. My 15s are stacked up in my parents' garage 200 miles away!

Personally though I reckon G40s look best as close to standard as possible. Dropped slightly on a set of 14" BBS RAs but otherwise stock looks perfect.

i've mostly got subtle changes on the exterior of my G,apart from the jetex exhaust (that will be going soon) i've had a few thoughts about using my spare conv kit to build a standard g40 but i can't seem to find a decent shell to use!

i like my car the way it is, its pretty much std, but all mods on it are 100% reversable in a day.  I bought a gt to go bonkers with from a tinkering point of view.  I don't feel any great need to make my g40 faster either

Trouble with the G is that it's a flawed genius, short of braking (greatly) and cornering power by todays standards. Some folk have put a lot of time and effort into rectifying the shortcomings and a G with a subframe, 14" RA's and bigger brakes isn't going to look too non standard. You can have it both ways.
