cam seal

my rocker cover bolt has snapped and drilling it out seems to be a fair old task and was wondering if anyone had the spare piece of metal that wraps over the seal next to they pulley what the rocker cover bolts go in!

please help someone!

if you mean a cam cap that the rocker cover bolts in to - they are machined to each head - so you are better off removing it and getting it drilled and tapped or trying to get it out by other means

yeah just had me mate round n he said that! no possibilities of getting one new from vag then? if there is im guessing it could be really pricey?

iv started to drill with a 5m drill bit as i have a really old tapping tool! but it really looks like this aint gonna work its just pushing off centre even at a real slow speed with the drill n its gonna be off centre if i continue to drill it!!

will this cause me problems when i come to putting my rocker cover back on?

take the cam cap off and take it to any local machining shop - they will charge you a few quid and sort it out

if you cant find anywhere - pm tdhsyorks he might be able to sort it for you

they'll drill the stub of the bolt out - tapp it if they can, if not helicoil it

The cam caps are helicoiled from the factory, so long you've not damaged anythig other than the snapped end of the bolt and the helicoil, all should be well after a trip to the local engineers workshop as Pete suggests. Hope it works out for you!

when I've done this I have managed to get the snapped bit out with some needle nose pliers as it shouldn't be tight at all.

yeah i tried it with the needle nose pliers dint work! even cut a slit in the top of the bolt to put a screw driver in n that never worked! just ate away!

fair enough, I'd let a machine shop deal with it then. As others have implied, when the heads were manufactured, the caps get torqued down and then line-bored so ensure a perfect alignment of the cam journals so swapping another cap on can cause excessive camshaft wear. I know people have done and got away with but it's risky and how long it'll last is another question...
