Hi All,

I got the 40 engine running well in the mk1 golf, was originally dissapointed in the lack of power, then realised my custom throttle cable was slack, suddenly its a different beast, i love it but there is a strong tappy noise, slightly stronger than tappets, it becomes apparent when you're rolling along at 30 and you gently accelerate to 40. well, it happens any time I put the engine under load, when its rolling along at the desired speed it quietens down. It has the forged pistons and big valve head, the timing must be right because it really goes when you ask it, but i don't want to damage it,

does anyone have any ideas?

thanks guys.

Note: it sounds just as bad when warm as when cold.

cheers, will.

What injectors are you using? Apparently the G60 250cc ones pulse quite loudly (as I hope to confirm 1st hand at some point! ;)).

yeah it has the bigger injectors, I think it's the exhaust manifold blowing to be honest, i', going to get it to bits at the weekend.

Alternator rattle?

If you don't have a stethoscope try going round the engine with a piece of tube and putting it to your ear and parts of the engine. A screwdriver does the same job but is a little more awkward, lol.

May be a little hard if it only does it whilst moving though! :P

cheers for all the help guys, it is the exhaust manifold, I have never heard them blow like that though, it really sounds like metal on metal but there is a corresponding puff of gas at the right hand end of the exhaust manifold so i'm happy that it is not more serious.
