A 20v in a G40 is an epic fail mate its not worth the money from what other have said the 20v is a heavy engine you will find the 20v will not handle. strait line speed will be fine but when you come to corners you will die.

unless you are installing the engine in the rear.

Henry

I wouldn't really say its an epic fail mate, although that does depend on what you want out of the car. For achieving a huge amount of power for drag racing, I would say it's quite an epic win, especially if you have a proper gearbox fitted.

I guess cheddarcheese is a bit jealous then eh? ;)

So, an American G40 owner, I think you are the first on here except for Jules who exported his with him from the UK to Canada.

I see it's left-hand-drive, did you import it yourself from somewhere in Europe?

Good luck with the engine conversion anyway, I don't think there is anyone in the UK who has done this conversion but I know it's been done in Germany.  As I'm sure you know, putting those engines into a mk3 isnt easy.

Hi Marco
Did you buy your G from Oliver ?,i spoke to him the other week.
The transplant would be a massive task and no doubt massive power but you are taking away the originality of the G and not to mention handling of the car, speak to some of these lads on here  about traction and cornering in the wet ,alot will say brown trouser time and give me 20 fags to steady nerves  .I know because i,ve done it myself loads of times with only 145bhp but that is the buzz of the G...
Here is a couple of companys that do some good tuning parts for the g40 ,one of them do a kit for 5000 euros which takes it too aprox 215 bhp   BIG POWER for a lite car and still a G40  ;)www.bar-tek-tuning.de    and the other is www.rp-motorsport.de/en/g-lader/g40-powerkit-5.htm     Hope these help there is alot of good stuff on here.. ;D

Cheers Jules

p.s about the G40 locations mine used to be doncaster south yorkshire england but now calgary alberta Canada ,did laugh at the comments

It's possible that RPM are not trading anymore, PeteG40 has said a couple of times that the phone number is dead and he's had no response to e-mails. Perhaps someone else knows differently, one of our European memebers perhaps?

I'm not going to argue either way for the suitability of the transplant, both sides have pros and cons but at the end of the day it ain't my car! It does seem a bit of a shame to use a G40 for this though when any mk3 coupe will do, after all, there won't be much of the original mechanicals left afterwards!

p.s. is "mechanicals" actually a word? :D

lol jealous No  :D

what would i be jealous of?

lance

not an easy task as said mate but go for it! maybe make a sump guard up as the engines sit very low so the "hood" can shut.

I just dont buy this whole "it'll be too heavy and weigh too much" argument, it's a bloody 1.8 litre engine, it's not like it's an all iron 7 litre v8!

People always say the same thing about VR6 into a mk2 golf but having driven and been in several, I can confirm that it's all bollocks.

a reliable 300bhp? :)

Mate if i had that much bhp i would be dead the same reason i don't have a fast bike because I would be dead so not somthing to be jealous of and plus who gets jealous of people who get company's to do all the dirty work for them not me!  ;D

dub-disaster

I do have to say that getting it done by somone else does reduce the satisfaction you get when you make somthing all yourself. Although something like this 1.8t conversion you have to realy know what your doing as well as have the correct kit and space , so I understand getting it done by a company!

Good on you Marco!  Its good to be different!

It will handle but it isn't a case of just sticking the engine in on stock or 'normal' polo suspension, some proper chassis mods and setting up will be essential.  Corner weighting the rear abit to offset it will help, although the polo as you know is light as the rear anyway.  With 300bhp, making the polo slightly heavier isn't a hassle to power to weight.  Although the engine is aluminium, its still slightly heavier than the polo engine obviously and yeah it will stick out the bottom a bit, but sump guard it and should be ok.

As Hayesey says and also if anyone knows GVK off clubGTi with his boat anchor mk2 VR6, handles very nicely.

Not that i was looking 1.8T'ing my space frame G back in the day or anything. ;D 8)  ...the low sump was a concern, I was looking at dry sumping at the time too as originally with the G40 engine I had it dropped and tilted to lower CoG and hitting a  Kerb on track would of holed it.

Fred

Leave the G40 as it is and get a normal Polo coupe and stick the fat engine in the rear so rear wheel drive.
Ian Birch who was the founder of Dubsport here did it.

Don`t spoil that lovely G

Fred.
