A question I keep asking myself is what is it about G40's that makes me want one.  I've sold 2 previously and although at the time it made sense, I immediatly wanted another.

My dream daily car is a B5 Audi RS4 twin Turbo however something inside me craves a G40.  I've satisifed this itch by purchasing my 3rd G40

I think for me its not only the fact that everytime I get in her she makes me smile just from the raw power, its also knowing that its a rare old beast that goes so low under the radar it makes peoples jaw drop when they're trailing behind me.

Whats ur reasons for sticking what is essentially a humble mk3 polo on steriods????????? :)

Yoof

Lovely G :)

On the surface they're unassuming and I quite like the look of them, underneath they can be a totally different kettle of fish.

I'd also love an RS4, although I managed to subdue the craving by beating one at the Pod last year  :P

When I sold my polo cup, I sold my passat variant VR5 to. I did that to have only one car to do track days and go on holydays/week-ends... So I bought a Porsche 996 (which is always in my own possession). What happened 6 month later? I bought a new G40 ::)
It's strange bu I have more pleasure to drive my G40 than my Porsche even if this one give me a lot of "good vibrations".

I'm a member of a 911 owner club, an other member try my both G'40 and two months later he bought a MKII G40 8)

For me, G40 is like a drug, I'm addicted and I cannot really explain why. The problem is that my wife and my 6 years old daughter are addicted to...

With my Porsche I can drive slowly, keep quiet, with a my G40 its impossible :-\

For me now I still hanker for another G40, me so for a second car, even my old red one if I could track the owner down, even though my brain says you know the sensible thing would be to buy newer such as R32, new Scirocco R, etc.  Albeit my most fancied car at mo is a 56plate onward Audi A4 or A6 TDI Avant S Line.

I even want another Corrado really badly but a choice between that or another G40?  I think the 40 would win... but then I know me, and I would turn it toward the track again.

My missus made a remark the other day after seeing a really nice low as fcuk white mk3 on bbs ra's pass by... ' but when you drive it?  'It'd be the fastest weekend shopping car in all of lincolnshire!'  Err, yeah...doh.

I get to drive all sorts with work (I'm a motoring journo) including lots of much faster, better handling and more capable cars than the G40. But whenever I get the G40 out for a decent session of ragging it always puts a massive smile on my face.

It costs next to nothing to run, it's rapid enough to be fun without risking my license every time I touch the throttle and it's unassuming enough that nobody thinks I'm a twat when I'm just driving around normally. I know I'd miss it if I ever sold it, so I can't see myself ever doing so.

Basically for very little cash I have a little rocket sat in the garage. I can't afford to run anything else which would give me so much fun. :)

Robin

For me its BOOOOOOOOOOOOOST!

I'm starting to miss my G40, its currently dry stored however is still taxed and MOT'd so i can bring it out to play. I personally love the way it looks and the way it feels when you mash your foot to the floor, the way the front end squirms trying to put the power down also makes it very fun.

Most of all though the way it destroys other cars on the roads (in a straight line) will make me keep it forever unless i loose my job and can't afford to keep it!

The Honda is more fun in different ways, its much more sports car like however the Polo feels more special as i know that i have reshelled it myself and done all the work on it and know it inside out. The A3 compared to both of the cars is pretty damn boring but its nice to be able to cruise at 90mph in silence once in a while.

Theres just something about them, probably the fact they're such a sleeper car that lots of people don't know what they can do. If i had to choose between my r32 and my g40 for a sunday drive i'd choose the g40 i think. Newer cars are nice for comfort etc, but they're so much more expensive for brakes/tyres/fuel etc

I agree with all the above comments but anothe reason is I like the idea that I own and drive quite a rare car.  Unless you are in the know I would think that 90% of the general motoring public would not have a clue as to what a g40 is due to the POLO always being upstaged by the Golf Gti.

Rare car + getting cheaper + falling into wrong hands + getting written off = even rarer car of which I own a very tidy example.

A happy chap indeed ;D

Max

I don't know but I want another one!

Performance is obvioulsy awesome, but I actually think they look good too lol

For me i cant put my finger on it exactly.. a combination of the fact it IS a VW, its NOT a golf, its not usual, its quick, its unsuspecting and its fun.. I would say its cheap but this is not strictly true when you get a stupid obsession with the bloody things!!

grayg40

the thing i like about them is, the way you dont have to drop gears to overtake people and it just keeps pulling. i can safely say this is my most reliable and fastest car i have had to date. as everyone say's the G brings a smile to your face every time you drive it.
the amount of people that have asked me "did you fit the charger yourself" and " what is it? a 1.6?" I also love the fact you can play with cars that have near twice the cc's and get them thinking what the f*ck, its a polo up my ass.
most of the things have already been mentioned but hae hoe.
the only time i will get rid of my G is when i die.

I think its just coz its a childish toy you can grow old with.
For me it does look very cool and a bit retro dependant styling.
they are quite high up in the "supermini" status when modified.
plus its VAG :)

I want another. Been sat browsing the classifieds for one all day. There is something about them, I mean ultimately my Golf is a 'better' car, it's nearly as quick as my G40 was, it's got lovely warm heaters, loads of room for 4 people, handles well, and sounds lovely, but the G40 just makes you laugh and smile when you drive it!

Anyone fancy a Golf VR6?  :P

Err, no thanks.

The fact it's VAG or not doesn't bother me, I'd much sooner have an old Ford anyday, but lack of funds prevent that. :(
I haven't got a G40 but a mk2 breadvan. Personally I prefer the shape of the mk2, but for me it's the fact of owning something that looks so unassuming and to 99% of people think is gonna be  dead slow.
Floating along at 150mph in the leather clad interior of an Aston Martin or whatever isn't my idea of fun. 100mph in a 21 year old Polo is far more exciting, you really have to be concentrating and alert. 150mph in a 21 year old Polo would be complete and utter madness, but fun nonetheless. :o

The G40 is a pretty quick car (in a straight line) even in standard guise, modified they can be extremely fast. Yoofs turbo is ultimate proof of this.

Virtually any basic old car modified to produce lots of power is gonna be fun.

Yeah I do like my old Fords too but I'm more concerened about the terminal rust issues at lot of old Fords seem to have. Plus the fact that depsite the issues with the VW scene there seems to be bigger ones with the Ford lot. I do like the fact that it isnt a Golf though, anyone can go out and buy a golf and make it fast/nice etc. I always like to be a bit different if I can and the Polo fits that nicely, along with all the all above mentioned reasons, fast unassuming etc. Above all thought they are bloody good fun (and reasonably cheap)!
