Having a look through the haynes book (and not taking it as gospel) It seems there is no limit / tolerance for cylinder wear or piston to bore clearance. It refers in the procedure for checking, to check in the specifications where there isn't a specifcation !

Does anyone have any reliable information on this ?

Thanks

Fred

That a good question Dan.
It gives the feeler gauge idea to check Piston rings but thats about it.
My MK2 Polo C had less than a thou of an inch barrel wear at 82K and
at 162K was little more but the pistons had become somewhat sloppier
in the bores but this was also The Carbed 1LTR.
Obviously theres far more stress involved with G40`s so i`ll Guess more wear
But i would imagine that the Pistons would be the 1st to wear down.
A compression test would help but then so would new Piston rings.
Not sure if there was more of an idea in the MK2 manual bout this
and tho not G40 they are the same bore size as its a longer stroke that
makes it a 1.3 but you probably know all this anyway.
I`ll have a search thru my MK2 Manual and see if i can find any relevance
to it.
