Ive just changed engine and gearbox mounts and no matter what i do the gearbox touches the subframe at the back near the rear mount. theres maybe a 1mm gap while its up in the air but it vibrates when driving. sat in traffic sounds like the whole things about to explode.  Any ideas. it was ok until i put the front gearbox mount on

New OEM mounts or poly ones? The latter position the engine slightly differently, so you may need to trim down the crush tube on the rear mount so that the rubber compresses more, tilting the engine back up. Also note that there's a fair bit of tolerance on engine position,  so if you loosen all the mounts you can rag the engine/box around to give more clearance.

I had to undo all the engine mounts with the car level (on ramp etc), and really lever the gearbox/engine forwards, away from the rear of the subframe, to get a decent amount of clearance before tightening all the bolts..

(was also missing the 'plate' that sits above where the gearbox mounts to underside of the car - fitting one helped a bit too as it pushes the back of the engine/gearbox down a couple of mm)

Just new OEM Andy (euro crap parts ones) ive stopped it today by flipping the offside mount so it sits slightly higher. Temp measure until my day off monday. Anyone got a pic of the 3 mounts in the metal housing just incase the guys pressed one in upside down?.

Rusty i may have to do the same as you monday.

all 3 new mounts fitted and fitted right way up. Still on over run the gearbox vibrates aganst the subframe. also my exhaust now hits the tunnel when i start the car. Ideas on how to sort this anyone?

I had this problem dude when I fitted my mounts on Friday. Drove to poloshow and back, ragged it a lot and it seems to have settled the rubbers in a place where it doesn't rub. Loosen the main bolts a little and run the engine a bit till it find a comfy place. If that doesn't work, loosen em and crowbar the engine untill it sits in a non rubbing place

Golf G60 was a cheap oe upgrade I used to use before the poly mounts. You can use it front left and rear.

cheers lads, in the end i undid all 3 mounts and jacked up the engine a bit and wrestled it into a better position before dropping it back down. theres atleast 3 mm between the gearbox and the rear of the frame now.
