Cars for sale / J599 CWB - Cat B - Genuine VW Polo G40
« Last post by JoeH on July 07, 2023, 09:35:07 pm »
Price offers over £3,250
Intro
Here is my Cat B Polo G40 for sale - J599 CWB – to be sold as a whole.
The car was involved in a slow speed (20mph) collision to the nearside. Thankfully nothing critical is on that side of the car, the fuel tank is the other side. Interestingly no glass is broken, and the: driver’s door, bonnet, tailgate and sunroof all open and close. I haven’t tried the passenger door. Nearside roof gutter line and bottom of sill appear true. The car was tracked after it’s accident and it’s all within tolerance.
After discussion with the insurance, it is too be written off. Cat B, which means the car must be broken, or not used again on the public road.
This means the car could be used for racing / track days. Or one could transplant the engine into another shell. A Polo mk1-3 or possibly a mk1 Golf. The engine and running gear are all undamaged from the accident and run fine.

G40 Spec at time of accident/sale:
Engine
Derestricted air box (paper filter).
Ported R1 spec charger with stock pulley size, rebuilt by PeteG40 – never had a small pulley or chip
51mm ported and de-wedged throttle body
Gt Inlet Manifold
Rebuilt 1272cc Engine with Ported head - normal size valves. Head work and engine rebuild done by Tipton St John Garage, Devon in 2016.
Vernier Pulley (but stock cam)
PPP 4 branch manifold, (release batch 2, supercharger version)
Stainless exhaust
Stock ECU
All mods bar exhaust were made at 130k. Made 122bhp at the club polo rolling road in 2018. A sensible map and pulley and the current 122bhp should increase a lot, as the porting etc has all been done.

Chassis
Quaife diff in a rebuilt G40 gearbox. (Actually, allows the car to put the power down)
PPP stage 2 subframe (basically a big rectangle strut brace)
ARB Nylon blocks on ARB
Nylon outer TCA bushes, Poly inner
40mm Koni yellow suspension /dampers
Braided brake hoses
(all mods bar brake hoses were made at 95k)

Rest of car
Royal Blue LA5U, no body panel is perfect, I wouldn’t value the car on its body panels.
Interior is good – bar passenger side door cards. Rear seats weren’t in at the time of the accident, so they are fine.
Chassis has had extensive welding to deal with corrosion.
Engine and charger were rebuilt 25k ago, car is at 155k. Gearbox rebuilt at 95k
Prior to the accident, the car was in good mechanical condition. The main issues were – small leak of coolant from the radiator, occurred at higher rpm’s. Heated rear windscreen had some broken elements. Minor front wheel bearing rumble on sharp bends only.

Prospective buyer.
The buyer needs to understand this is an accident damaged car, the primary value in the car is the engine & gearbox.
The buyer is to arrange collection of the complete G40. It drives, rolls, brakes well enough.
I’m not interested in splitting the car – the prospective buyer is welcome to do that once it’s theirs.
Price is offers over £3,250. (If it doesn’t sell I could accept the scrap valuation the insurance have offered me, however it seems right to offer it enthusiasts first).
Located East Northants

I have absolutely loads of photos from Steve as the restoration is progressing. Work is happening quickly.

He's done a fair bit of work but there wont be a spec of crust on this shell once this is done.

He decided to replace the whole sills in the end, original plan was to just replace the front and rear edges as only those parts were crusty but someone had badly drilled holes in the tops of the sills to remount the sill trims for some reason. So it was just easier to replace the whole sills than try to make the existing ones good.

A couple of floorpan repairs:

Then the driver's side jacking point properly sorted out. When I got the car this was rusty and I did an "MOT spec" repair on it myself. So that's now cut off and properly sorted.

floorpans all sealed and coated in mastic. All the original sound deadening and sealant was removed to make sure everything was solid underneath. I'll be putting down new sound deadening and carpet underlay stuff before the carpets go back in.

The first of the rear arches is repaired, these weren't rusty but someone had chopped them about to make them wider and made a right mess of it. So replacement arches being fitted cut from another car.

Not all that much left to do repair wise now and it'll be ready for paint.

Meanwhile, I've had loads of things powder coated ready for the rebuild.

I've got a nice pile of new parts to go on it too. Need to get the rear axle and front suspension built up to get it rolling again in the not too distant future.

Calling Polo G40 Owners.

We have a 10 place stand at the huge Tatton Park VW Show on 6th August 2023.

Last year was the first year we had a club stand there ina number of years and it was a great day, as this show always is.

Please reply here or send me a private message, or an email to paul@polog40.co.uk to book your place.

Let your friends know about it too.

Any car G40 related (conversions or even just other nice Polos) are welcome. First come, first served.

If you're on the stand you don't pay for car parking at Tatton Park (usually a fiver I think) but you do still need to buy your own ticket for the show itself.

Exterior and Interior / Re: rear arches?

no where, sadly. Replacement panels for rear arches have never been made. you'll have to cut some from another shell.

Thankfully I found some decent quarters up in Skegness that should work nicely

General Car Chat / Differences between polo II and II FL
« Last post by Nismoit on May 01, 2023, 06:15:46 pm »
Good evening to everyone from Italy.

I'm looking to buy a G40 polo and saw that there are for sale some rare early series (some with 2 round headlamps and some with 4 round headlamps) and a lot of FL series.
Apart from esthetics, can you explain the Main differences between them in engine, mechanics , suspensions, etc?
Which Is the best to buy?

Facebook, it's the only place that people are posting on now. People rarely bother with the forum.

Thanks for your response. Useful info.

I see that the forum is quite dead, I don't have facebook so do you have any recommendations as to where to find info on G40 Polo's?

Thanks

Mark, no it's not the original engine the car had when you had it. Nealpeal bought the car as an empty shell and put his engine & charger from his car that he crashed (or got crashed into), really it was lucky to not get scrapped at that point, it'd have been about 10 years ago I think and empty g40 shells not being worth a lot then.

I've heard that Fred who lives near Nelson has the original engine but I think it's either been re-bored for 1341 already or had a melted piston and needs a re-bore.

So I think even though it's not the original engine, the engine I have is best as it's very original condition and from what I can see has never been modified in any way. I've got the code so will get the v5c updated to match.
