Title: Steering arms
Post by: tez on April 02, 2012, 01:51:54 pm
Does anyone know where I can get an offside G40 steering arm from? Mine's got a knackered bush somehow, and I can't find them for sale anywhere.

Cheers

they are obsolete so VW hertiage might be your best (only?) bet

Think these went obsolete a while ago now dont know of any rose jointed replacements but the rubber bushed non g40 arms are readily availible from gsf/euro car parts.

Is there no after market replacement / refurb kit?

I remember this going on my old G40 about 4 years ago, the part was put on back order and was about £70 when it finally arrived IIRC.

that wont be a proper g40 one with a rose bush though I don't think.  I don't think ECP or GSF have ever done them.

The one i took off wasnt rose jointed, so must of been replaced before! the rubber was pretty sturdy, i think its good for the job!  i only had to change it as the balljoint boot was split, the other end seemd fine !

Yeah just swap the boot over for an un-damaged one. I've done this a couple of times to keep G40 TCA's alive  ;D

Ah cheers for the info. What's the process for swapping them over, do you need a press or anything?

If you are good with swapping keys over then you'll be fine with this  ;)

sweet! will give it a go!

got 5 G40 tcas now that have been resigned to a corner because the ball joints were knackered!

what grease are people using? lithi? or cv grease?

theres a difference between ball joints gone and boots gone!

i'm sure there are places that replace ball joints though.

ahhh right, some have split boots and some have split boots and excess movement in the ball joint, some have OK boots but excess movement in the ball joint.

i thought the excess movement was caused by lack of grease in a sealed boot!

hunt continues to find somewhere that can or a way to replace the ball joints then!

well once the boot goes the bearing wont be too far behind as grit will get in and the grease will get out which wears out the bearing itself.  Depends how long they were run with split boots really.

Surely with all our combined expertise we can get some normal ones converted to G40 spec ones?

noooo you can have fecked boots with decent joints and vice versa... its not just grease keeping em good.

Can anyone get me a photo of the G40 steering arm vs a standard steering arm?
Thanks

It shouldn't be that hard really.  Remove the rubber bushes, then you'd probably have to machine the inner bore where the rubber was flat and then press a spherical bearing in.

If someone can get me photos of each type, or even just the G40 style I could look into making a batch up so we can have G40 specific items again

There are people who renovate ball and rose joints. HGV ball joints get a high pressure plastic injection to displace the existing worn insert with new plastic. Can't think of any names offhand though. Rosejoint renewal's a bit trickier but there are a couple of possibilities. One's a guy called John Pye Motorsport and I PM'd PeteG40 another a few weeks back(maybe didn't get it), guy who does Ford motorsport renovations/upgrades. Will start digging again.

I was at VW earlier in week and even the non-G40 items are obsolete now...

I've asked and if someone can send decent photos of TCA's and steering arms to phill@ramsport.com this guy says a re-furb might be on the cards.

Other Ford Motorsport oriented operations are worth a try as well.

Could be something PPP could turn their hands to?

Or maybe a company like superfwd could knock some up if asked.
