Title: "Best" LSD for daily use?
Post by: ereeiz on January 21, 2012, 12:28:53 pm
As my gearbox is going to be rebuilt (I think 2nd is damaged) I thought I may as well invest in an LSD at the same time.

I'd like recommendations on what you think would be the best one to go for.

My criteria is;

-Must work as a daily driver, 30miles Motorway, 10 miles A/B-roads
-I'd rather not have really heavy steering, don't mind a little bit more weight for low speed manoeuvres, but whilst driving I don't want to have to hang onto the wheel to get it to turn
-I'd rather not have to rebuild/ service it for a while (I do about 25k/ yr currently)
- I'd like it to make the car more responsive, but not at the sake of driveability- I read about some diffs being horrible in the wet, or really "snappy". I like to play about a bit an tend to slide/ lift off oversteer round most corners/ roundabouts when it's quiet.... but I don't want to have to battle with it constantly.

I'm not bothered about drag racing or track days, I just want to make the car more fun really and if poss, reduce torque steer and the 70/80 mph wheelspin that tends to occur through corners. The car's off the road for 6 weeks now (ideally OTR start of March) as I have a temporary shitty corsa diesel (I dont get that car- its horrific to drive!) and literally about £1k of upgraded bits to fit including lowered/ stiffer suspension, brake upgrades, subframe, and many other service/ worn items.

I plan on keeping this car the rest of my life (may not, but who knows! I think it's almost the longest I've owned a car-ever!) so don't mind spending a bit more money if it's justifiable.

I'm currently thinking the Quaife option would be best, but always good to hear others input/ advice!

Lastly, where would you recommend it be fitted (at the same time as servicing/ repairing the box)? JP Race in Silverstone is the only place I remember, having seen about 15-20 people on here/ PSD forum all praising their work- also not too far away from me.

If you are using it everyday then DON'T get a gripper plate diff. I have used mine on a regular basis and it's horrible. On the track it's brilliant.

Yeah it sounds like you'd be better off with a quaiffe atb rather than an LSD

Just to confirm, this is the one I was looking at (I think it's the only option they do anyway). Is this what you're talking about Hayesey?

http://www.quaife.co.uk/shop/products/qdf20r

Does anyone recommend anywhere to get one from? Andy/ Yoof perhaps? Or is best to just get it direct from Quaife for £724? I just realised the price is +VAT +Deivery :o thought it was just £600

Any group buys going on? :p lol

I haveve got a quaife in mine and can confirm nice easy road manners on day to day use still tugs at the steering wheel a little if you floor it on an un even surface but any type of lsd is going to do thatt.

   As for price i bought mine for £550 all in in the club lupo group buy so your best having a search around for a group buy although i remeber tsr are selling them quite cheaply at the moment try getting in contact with them on the club gti website or by phone they will recon your box and fit it at the same time but i doubt youll have much change left over from £1k probably in the £800-1k mark although there realy easy to fit yourself helpful if youve got a press or know somone with a press makes the job easier saves alot of cash and there is a step by step guide on here if you need it.

  It was pretty much a case of splitting the box pulling the crown wheel of the old diff bolting it on the new diff, fitting some bearings on either side , measuring the end float then setting the required preload by adjusting the size of shim.

Hope this helps

I think TSR charge £900.

We should get a group buy going and get them cheaper!

go direct to quaife for a group buy you get a better price, i think the minuim order theyll drop price for is 10 although they dont all have to be g40 diffs so worth putting it up on club polo or maybe club gti

Woohoo! Cheers lads!

"I'm interested" headcount so far;
1. Jezza-7
2. Randombadger
3. Andy
4. ereeiz <Definite>

Didn't put definite for you guys in case you're only interested.

What sort of closing date do you think is realistic?

For me ideally, my car would be back on the road the beginning of March (so about 6weeks from now), but if I have to wait a couple of weeks to save a decent chunk of money then I'm willing to put up with that bastard Corsa a bit longer!

Having looked at what I assume is a cut n' paste copy from club lupo; http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=44796 (Im not a member and not registered yet = cant view it on lupo site) there's a good point about the weak pound, so may be more appealing to European users, or perhaps even maxrpm.de? Don't know how much money they'd keep tied up in stock.

haha thats my old forum uk polo's. Will speak to them tomorrow and see what they say on time etc as well. Then it all really comes down to how many people will put the money down.

TSR sell them for £639 incl vat + £12 postage so if quaife dont do a good discount then i might try tsr and see what they can do as i know them.

Bon!

I didn't know that was your site. Used to go on there quite a bit at one point to escape clubpolo, but then no one really posted much so gave up!
