Title: My Windsor Blue G40
Post by: Weeman on January 02, 2012, 11:22:04 pm
Well seeing as i have been a member on here for some time now i think its about time to post up my own bulid thread...

I own a 93 G40 in Windosr Blue, bought it back in 2006 after writing off my Rover (No laughing!!) Always wanted to oen one but could never afford to when i was younger. Anyway here are a few pics of it when i bought it...

Car went throught a few minor changes over the years and ended up looking like this

then this before it finally came off the road in 2008!

Spent awhile on my drive way as i wasnt sure how much i was going to do to it, it needed a few spots welding up here and there (under the rear lights) So bought some replacement panels off a mate who had stripped a car, rust free bonnet ( the green one) as mine had gone along the front edge.

Started to strip the car down, engine out bay washed, engined cleaned and wings off as they were in a bad way too. Spent a winter under a car cover and i lost interest in it as i had no spare cash and it was cold working outside as i had filled the garage with my engine and spares lol

Car then got towed to a mates house who kindly rented me his garage... it stayed there for a whole year untouched and unloved :(

So on to mid way thru last year (2011) I bought my Mk4 Golf Estate and started going to shows and really missed doing them in the G so pulled my finger out my arse and found a garage/lock up and moved the car there, started to strip it out so i could see what i needed to do and found the sills had rotted through, engine bay had rusted in a few places and got cheesed off so left it AGAIN!

New Home

Then mid november a mate started asking if i had spares as he was building a Mk1 Polo G40.. This reignited my love for my car so went out and bought two new sills from VW (breadvan sills as coupe ones are obsolete!!) and started to strip the car fully.

So the car is currently sat on four axle stands and has nothing but fuel line and rear brake lines attached... oh and some of the wiring loom that i havent yet reamoved. Heres a few pics of how it sits now...

So plan is... replace all rusted parts for new genuine parts where i can and make new where i cant. Then a  full respray in original colour as i love it and couldnt change it. Rebuild the engine (possibly with a big valve head i have sat around)Mk1 Golf front hubs and coilovers, and a few more bits to come but way to many to list!! and then drive it!!

So keep your eyes open as things will be happening so much as i can and i will updates as often as possible. Thoughts and comments welcome :)

Cheers Iain!

Looked sweet before but what on earth made you paint the bonnet green?

Good to see your throwing some time in to it now and good luck with it all.

Haha I didn't paint it green. Bought it like that as I was after a rust free bonnet an found that one. Shall all be painted in original colour so all is good :)

An yeah just been and ordered a new n/s lower rear panel tonight from Vw.

Out of interest anyone on good turn with their local dealers? I'm I'm need of a rear centre panel but it's obsolete. Just wondering if anyone knows of any or their dealer can search for one? Would be greatful :D

I can check ETKA, I need a part number though. Because they have wierd names for body panels!

Apparently these guys have supplied quite a few parts that were 'obsolete' in the UK. A couple of guys on the corrado forum have used them apparently. Might be worth a go.

I'm in a similar position to you with my white car, its been sat in a garage for two years and I've been over to it about 8 times in those two years whilst I've been concentrating on my track car. I've got it home now so am about to start getting it back on the road. Its nowhere near as stripped as yours is though and in my current garage I haven't got the space to do a full strip down like that. Good luck with it, looks like you've got a lot of work to do, it was a nice car back in the day just look at the pictures of how it used to be when you need motivation.

Cheers for the link I will have a look and see what's available, an yeah I keep looking back at old pics.

An yeah it's was in July 2001. Used as the G40 buyers guide car. Still have a copy of the mag as inspiration. I didn't own it then but would be nice to have it back in one day!

Well a small update on this week progress...

Friday i went to VW and managed to order a lower left and right rear cornor panel. Nice and cheap at £35 each so was happy at that. Found the rear panel on the website you linked me too Sam so im going to order one of them too then i cn get the rear end sorted.

Took most of mine off are will upload pics later on. came off easy as there wasnt much metal left holding it on.... Just seam sealer!! :S

Hi,
Has this progressed at all?
Reminds me of some of my project car's. You end up going through stages of hating it. But it will be well worth it in the end.

Looks like the work to fit the tow bar assembly did not help with the corrosion!

Nice colour thoe .

No progress so far after cutting the rust out I got fed up, everywhere I turned there was more.

I bought another shell to cut up over the winter so progress will start soon :)
