Post by: alan gorst on November 23, 2010, 01:50:10 am
how come most suspension kits you see for the mk3 polo all say they fit the mk1 mk 2 mk3 the derby but not the g40? ??? does anyone where i can get a spring and shock kit with adjustable dampers for the g40?

Shortened inserts.

The G40 suspension was 20mm lower and 20% stiffer over stock polo suspension originally.

You can get them from anywhere, honestly. :D

its just because the g40 is slightly lower than normal polos when standard.  So if they sell a "60mm" lowering kit it wont actually lower a g40 by 60mm and people would no doubt complain to the company.  That's all it is.

Shortened inserts.

A lowering kit should have shorter dampers anyway.

just any for a mk3 polo!  They don't lower a g40 as much as they advertise them as since a g40 is lower to start with but thhats the only difference and the reason they dont advertise them as for a g40.

Been looking at the suspension also.

Are these ok or are they a bit of an unknown make.

im just trying to stick to a budget but without being cheap, and do they come as a complete unit with the hub/bearing housing at the bottom.

Gavin, all spring and damper kits are just that, no hubs/front strut assemblies are supplied. As stated, any spring damper kit for a mk2/3 Polo will fit the G40.
You'll have to remove the damper insert from the front struts and put the new ones in.
Generally, the more you pay the better the quality of the kit. Some of the cheap ones are noted for giving a very stiff ride which isn't much good for handling or roadholding.

ive still got the origional suspension on my bready at the moment is the fitment still going to be the same, Has any one done  a step by step guide of how they are removed from the origional hubs and the new struts installed (just so i can see what is involved first before i buy some.

what about the spax psx kits? any good? you can get them for £309 from larkspeed and every car i have had had handled like a go car on spax psx

I'd personally avoid Spax, especially at the rear. The springs (which I believe are the same throughout the range) are far too harsh IMHO. The dampers are pretty reasonable though.

As above I wouldnt have spax springs on my car again. It was like having four scaffolding poles at each corner of the car with them on (PeteG40's words). I swapped the springs and it was loads better. If you were going to pay £309 for the spax I believe the H&R is only about £350 online. Cant remember where though, get googling!

Again, I bought a Spax kit many moons ago and wasn't happy with it. Took a bit of effort but I managed to get a refund from Halfords for the springs as they were too hard and too low, I kept the adjustable dampers and bought some Eibach springs instead. Much better, the suspension actually worked then!

Hi
I am also looking for a new set of coil-overs. The 4 mentioned above all state a 30% increase in stiffness, this is for a standard Polo. As the G40 is already 20% stiffer would these kits just increase 10%. Doesn't really seem worth it to me.
Thanks Duncan
