yeah it sounds like something is not attached somewhere, does it always run for 30 seconds, or just once then dead?

the 2 pipes off the lift pump may be the wrong way around?

Ive checked all the hoses i took off and everything is back on, is it possible i might have trapped some lines inbetween the tank and the floor restricting flow? or could the fuel filter be the probelm.

It cut out 6 times this morning in less then a mile distance.

When i come to start it it takes a few mins to settle, its like i have to keep pumping fuel in, when you turn the ignition on?

could it be air in the tubes? did you bleeded the system?

Could it be the power output from the car? I know the pumps prime when you turn the key but when the engine is running, they might run off the power produced from the alternator. If the alternator is old it could be that. If its not spinning fast enough at low revs the power output will beless, when you accelerate it spins faster producing a higher output. I have herd of people saying that when you have your headlights on then accelerate a little you can see them get brighter, usually due to alternator.

Just a thought?

If you wanna try another pump to see if your pumps arent gone i have both pumps that i removed a few months ago. Could send them to you to try them out?

It sounds something like my other car did! A renault 19. It would start some times and work just fine and next time it would give me hell and worked like shit! It was the pump at its final moments! But some other weird though just hit me! Well we all know that when you consume fuel air must go in the tank to replace the vacuum! Some tanks have a little hole on the cap witch when clogged gives you similar effects to what you describe, don't know how it's working with the g40 tank but just try running the car without the cap and see how it goes! ( have an extinguisher at hand as well  ;D)

it only primes once! if its already primed it won't do it twice! check the connections to the pump or else it's just dead!

yeah it didnt start when i first turned the key, which pump will it be, and how hard are each to replace, i can see the one behind the rear right wheel, but where is the other one, should i replace both?

There is only one behind the wheel area, that cost around £160 from vw.
The other one is in the tank. Thats alot cheaper. Around £35

Will send you my pumps so you can check if its your pumps that are gone. I wouldnt like to sell them though as they have both done 100k and i can therfore not promise they will last forever.

Will pm you.

Are the g40 pumps same as the gt fuel pumps?
I have had a brand new fuel tank from VW so the pump in there should be ok?

How does the fuel system run,
What does each pump do, and do they both run contantly.
Ive just been doing some investigation, and my car starts and runs, i had my hand on the rear fuel pump, and after about 40sec- 1 min, it cuts out, this is when the car stalls.

Seeing as it is woking do you reckon my fuel filter is clogged.
Really is puzzling me.

It should run constantly when the engine is running

CHanged the fuel pump relay, and the fuel filter, it was still cutting out a little bit but now runs sweet, think the filter must have been blocked?

ALl good now
