Title: What could be wrong? Temperature...
Post by: AdzCM on April 08, 2010, 03:54:00 pm
Hey guys, im not sure what temperature a standard G40 should be running at but mine seems to sit around 90degrees even when moving sumtimes 100 - this to me seems pretty high :(

What would make it this warm?

Could it be a faulty sensor?

How can i make it run colder?

My mate 'claims' his g40 never runs over 70degrees [eaton conversion]

Thanks

i've had about 5 g's.  I'd say stuck on 90 is good, summer 100 when the fan is on in slow moving traffic is normal.  Mine is now 70 and it appears to run cold... but in my opinion its the gauge thats sh1t!

anecdote - my dads g40 used to run cold - 75 ish all the time and mine used to run hot 95 ish all the time.  We swapped the black temp senders between them (this controls the dial) and then both ran at 85-90 LOL

If it's causing sleepless nights it might be worth changing the thermostat. I've had a couple jam  over the years, yours might not be opening properly.

it's your mate who has the problem, it;s meant to sit at 90deg.  His thermostat is opening too soon (although this can be seen as an advantage if doing a lot of spirited driving, track days or if you live in a hot climate (but the UK isnt)).

I've had black temp senders that would only go up to a certain temp no matter how hot the coolant was. Could be a dodgy black sender too. Always worth grabbing some as spares when on a scrappy run.

It's wierd though, I'm not loosing coolant and I get a kind of overheating smell in the car even shortly after starting it from cold. It's not really bad but it's what made me paranoid about the high temp.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll try a new black temp sender first n see what happens

again, there is nothing wrong, you are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.  90deg is correct.

Mine sits at 80 pretty much all the time. I used a really good mix of coolant.

Try using water wetter.

oh ok then, thanks.

cheers for that james - worth a try to have it run slightly colder, it does tend to creep up around 100 degrees and i dont like it lol
