Title: Alternator
Post by: giorgio on June 29, 2008, 06:23:58 pm
My G is struggling to make 13v. Bristles were cleaned yesterday but to no joy.

VW want some stupid figure, and GSF list one excluding the G40.

I know there is the upgrade where you use a 90 Amp one of the big block VWs although I don't want the hassle. Discovered a few niggly problems during the remap so time is on a limiting factor.

What do people do for new alternators?

you might be able to get yours rebuilt.  I know Dan Knight got one done by someone in huddersfield, it was a lot cheaper than buying new.  Speak to a local auto-electrician about it.

What makes a G40 one PY specific?

Is there a guide on what wears out. I assume its one/several part(s) that are broken, so in theory they should be fixable.

ETKA has some nice exploded diagrams....I might dismantle my spare GT one and see if a repair is possible

its the brushes that wear im told...maybe some internal parts are interchangable if you have a good one.  i think the only thing that makes it specific is the mounting plates/case as it is held differewntly isnt it on the charger mount.

Got a reply back from them this morning, very efficient, wanting to know the part number of the OE item.

Anybody lend a hand, ETKA is not being useful
