Title: Indicators
Post by: Jezza-7 on November 07, 2009, 02:20:57 pm
Got a problem with my indicators. When i indicate one direction i get all indicators come on. Any suggestion's what it could be?

Well it used to have an alarm, well the wiring was left behind. That has been all removed and what was disconnected was reconnected so no circuits were incomplete.

Gonna run a fluke on it to see if that can pick up a problem somewhere.

Did have dash board out but that was 2 weeks ago and it has been fine since then.

Strange.

Cool, you have to basically put your head up the passenger side footwell as if you were laying facing the ceiling and have a look up there if i remember correctly!

Awesome, will do that today as im finishing work early. Someone said it could be the actual indicator stick. Will have a look at both though.

If not your grounds could not be very good or you might need to put some diodes in the circuit to stop the feed back.

Think it is a relay that is not working. From the wiring diagrams in the manual it says that it is the realy next to the one 53.

It has 3 pins and the 54 has got 4 pins.

It is earthed into the main loom so i dont think it is a earth problem.

Will go to vw and get some new ones.

Well i went vw a they wanted £135 plus vat to replace 6 relays as i was gonna do a few.

But its not the relay as yhou can hear it working and i swapped it over with a newer one at it didnt fix it.

Gonna look at earthing now.

So you reckon steering wheel off and that to see what the wiring is like. Might pop out tonight to look at it.

Right this is really getting to me now, i had a quick look and all the wiring seems fine. Will have a better look tomorrow.

Could some one give an indication what i should be looking for?

If i still got this problem then im gonna take it to vw cause its pissing me off.

try petes suggestion first, make sure the big connector on back of fuse box is pushed on properly!

Where would that be?

Up passenger footwell?

Tried that and nothing still.

Found a wire unplugged so i connected it back up but that did nothing. The wiring is such a mess. there are wires that go from 2 wires to 1 and some single wires go into a connection block terminal and then go straight back out the same way. It really takes the piss and im getting well pissed off now.

Im gonna make a fly lead from the earth wire that comes out of the relay to earth it to a earth point under the dash just incase the earth is dodgy.

Apart from that it will be steering wheel off tomorrow and looking at the connections around the stick.

The relay is not 53, its the one next to it. I unplugged it while it was on and it stopped so i know the relay is good.

The haynes manual is a bit poor for the Direction indicators and hazard warning wiring diagram.

God this is a nightmare. If i cant get it sorted i think i might sell it :-[

Ah yeah that would make sense. When i took the wires out from the alarm that was there before, they just left wires there, i reconnected them all back up so that i didnt break any circuits. I will go disconnect them ones now and see what happens.

Any idea what colour they are?

Haynes manual says SW/WS and SW/GN but i couldnt see either black/white or black green last night. Will check now and will see what it could be.

Success!!!!!!

Was looking all over the place dor the wires, found some loom with a load of electrical tape wrapped round so i unravaled it and guess what, two indicators wires joined together using another piece of wire. So took that away and it works now back to the way it used to!!

Thanks for your help pete and rae.

Rae if i could kiss you i would so heres a kiss x

Lol cheers lads!!
