Title: Gauges
Post by: Jezza-7 on November 02, 2009, 05:39:21 pm
Looking at getting a boost gauge, oil pressure, oil temp for oil cooler when i get it.

I was looking at mocal boost gauge, mocal dual temp and pressure then another gauge, dont know what one though.

Are there any gauges that are good to get and not to get?

Looking to try keeping them all the same.

VDOs... They are accurate and cheap concerning the stack ones...
Don't buy auto gauge and other cheap gauges they are crap and you will waste your money...

aren't Autogauge a cheapo rip off of proper Autometer ones?  I have an Autometer boost gauge and it's very nice indeed.

Ok. Thanks.

Whats the difference between mechanical and electrical gauges?

mechanical ones, a pipe goes into the back of the gauge and a mechanical mechanism operates the dial.  With an electrical one you have a sensor in the engine bay connected up to whatever you are measuring (e.g. an oilway if connecting to an oil pressure or temp gauge), then a wire goes into the car and to the back of the gauge.

Mechanical ones generally give much faster readings, electrical ones normally move up and down very slowly.  The disadvantage to mechanical ones is that you have to run an oil pipe into the car.  I have mechanical gauges for my oil pressure and boost gauge (although I think boost gauges are nearly always mechanical) with a stainless steel braided pipe into the car for the oil pressure gauge.

That makes sense now. So really mechanical are better but i suppose it depends on what you want?

How many gauges have you got and what ones?

currently just got two, boost pressure and oil pressure.  I need to get an oil temp one as well though.  Oh I also have an air-to-fuel ratio meter but it's not really a gauge, more a box with numbers flashing on it.

Oh right, where did you get that one from?

what the afrm?  Can't even remember now it was years ago.  It came in kit form so soldering was required!  You can buy various types of afrm from loads of places though.  To be honest I'm not sure how useful it really is, other than it'd probably let you know if your lambda was totally knackered.

Yep, Autogauge are the cheapo version of Autometer gauges. You can get digital boost gauges from Autometer now with in built map sensor.
