hi all.
i have recently bought a g40 off this site. im looking to tune this vehicle and gain good horse power from it.
what are the advantages/ disadvantages of running a eaton charger over the standard one. is it worth the hassle.
any information will be appreciated

Were do I start, breifly I 'd say G40's are expensive to maintain(rebuild at 60k from new, then at 25k intervals depending on spec(Pulley size etc)) but also offer good boost from low rpm's and only really struggle if your requiring a high revving engine(though mine is good for 7.5K on 65mm pulley). A G40 is good for upto a 160 to 180 BHP engine.
Eatons are cheaper to obtain, with a second-hand usable one at about half the cost of a G-Lader service/rebuild. Eatons are better suited to high flowing heads, and oversize bore/piston set-up's. They can be a pain to setup with problematic pulley clearance issues, and air filter feed etc.
Thats few a breif conclusions from my limited experience and I'm sure others will have there own opinions. I'm a G-Lader myself and intend to stay that way cos I think there brill :D

A few people used Eatons because you could get them so cheap from mini cooper s's that have had the john cooper works conversion (where they remove the standard eaton and fit a worked one). PSD made a few kits in their time but I think you'll struggle to get one of them. AWT made a few kits which didn't seem to be very good and the security of the mounting of the charger left a bit to be desired.
Even though you can pick up the charger for ~£120 that's not even half the story. You also need to find or make the mounting brackets required, an outlet adaptor for the charger, different intercooler, boost piping etc...
You would be better off fitting a turbo, it really isn'y going to cost much (if anything) more.
Good thing about the Eaton charger itself is that they are very strong and have a sealed-for-life oil bath to lubricate the bearings rather than using engine oil as the G-Lader does.

hi cheers for all that. i have seen a couple of kits for sale on club polo / ebay for around 500 quid. is this reasonable. im not to bothered about the maintenace side of it as i work in garage. i will have a think about it.

depends what the kits include and how well they are made really. Some need a lot to be desired, the charger needs to be pretty solidly mounted. If you see a PSD kit for sale then they are good.
