Looks properly done- very nice indeed.

Just prepping mine for a cage, not sure I want to go through the the struts on the Mk3 though... Have you had a chance to fit the dash etc yet?

A worthwhile additional bar (which I'm not sure if you have) is between the rear turret and the door bars, lots of the berg boys add this in  :)

yeah i have looked over differing designs and talked it through with andy and he wasn't convinced that i would need anymore than the design you see here due to the fact the car will weigh nothing, althoughi i might reconsider as its going to go back up to his unit once i have the alloy fuel tank, pump and filter so he can plumb the fuel lines through the car and swage the fittings. I havent fitted the dash in yet but im pretty sure that it will have to be completey hacked at to get it in and due to the cage dash bar running above the steering wheel bracing im not sure that i will get the clocks back in anyway which is a bit of a pain so may have to go dashless/digital clocks for my sins.

Should be able to mate, so long as they're reasonably secure the speedo cable will work fine, the rest are just wires so can be extended to suit- digital dash would be nice, but it's £££

This is the bar I mean:

I know what you mean about adding extra bars- you can easily get carried away, you got any pictures of the front etc?

Ah that's superb work being done there Jez. 8)
The Andy Robinson cage looks a work of art. 'Tis gonna be a challenge getting in and out with those gussetted double door bars!  ;)
I spy the coilovers and subframe at the front - all good stuff. 8) Also see you have removed the bulkhead. Painting the inner wings body colour looks very tidy indeed - are you gonna continue this under the whole car?
Keep the pics coming Jez, this is looking the business.
Cheers,
Richard.

Its not to bad getting in and out believe it or not. The door X's are positioned so well, as is the whole of the cage. I'm not sure about the underside at the mo, so much to do - but i have a huge pile of bits so it should come together quicker than ever. Hopefully you will see it in its finished or there-abouts state in the new year! Cheers

Nice cage, what is the car being built for?
Title: Re: Fresh from Andy Robinson

Fun  :D

Once its built i'll have a think about the VAG series maybe, but for the time being just about building something that i have wanted to for a long time really....

If you do decide to race it, look at the Classic Touring Car Club Pre 93, Toyo Tires Pre 94 and the BARC Tin Top regs. The Polo is more suited to these championships (and they are cheaper to do)
The regs keep being expanded for the VAG series I was planning to run my Polo in a few rounds this year but have decided to see what comes out.

Thanks. The price was high but worth every penny, the workmanship is second to none. To give you a rough idea, the average quote i got for a similar design you see in the car was £1500+vat in cds t45.

Excellent Cagework.  Where about is he based?

Any update on your build progress?

Thanks. The cage fit and general workmanship is absolutely spot on. Andy Robinson is over near Basingstoke RG27 ... at a smallish premesis. The car is coming along slowly. Bodywork is coming along and got some pannels arriving shortly to finish it off. I've cleaned up the underside and re-sealed it with some light weight spray Upol stone chip. Engine is ready to go in. Fuel lines and brake lines on order. Lots of refitting to do but its coming along! Will be 'running' (just about) in the new year!

A pic of the underside once done. Pretty boring really. We straightened out the sills a little, stripped all the shitty rust from the cage points and other welding then sprayed with etch primer before going over with a normal primer then blasted the underside with Upol sprayable stone chip. Nothing much else to show at minute but it will come together pretty quickly with any luck..

Well, if you're only showing us one picture you might as well make it a big one Jez! ;D
Lovely work mate. I can't wait to see some more of this once it's complete.
What is the spec of the chassis and engine you'll be using?

Haha tried to put up another pic but it wouldnt load. Im crap with the internet and trying to up/download stuff  :D. I dont have a clue why its come out so big??

Not really alot to look at at the moment. I'll put some better pics up in the new year when its come together a bit more! Just busy working hard at getting it together and running for my final year degree project.

Looks like its going to be good.

I spoke to John (Mr VAG Trophy) and he is/was happy to accept my G40 into the series as part of an'Invitational Class'. Reason being that my polo is too far from original spec. I would essentially just be doing a track day during a Mk2 Golf race and paying the 750MC £120 for the privileged.

If your considering racing with the 750 MC then check the regs as they don't really like modifications. In fact most championships don't allow modifications to suspension pick up points Eg. Subframe conversion. This was an area I contested with the 750MC as a polo is not competitive (Relative to other VAG) without a subframe.

Title: Re: Fresh from Andy Robinson
Post by: hardchargin40 on December 01, 2009, 08:52:50 pm
The Subframe is allowed as it doesn't modify the main suspension pick up point which is the inner TCA bracket, and you are allowed to run without a Anti Roll bar, the subframe mounts to its bolt position.  The ARB can be added in the original position to the subframe anyway.

ARB would not be consider a suspension pick up point as on the cup cars they use lowering blocks therefore alterating its original position.

We ran like this in the VW Cup and the TRC South East Championship (class C) in 2004.  And I was legal in it too with the black one i was building at the time, for class A.  Obviously some specific champs may have specific regs that put the polo out, but most are alright afaik.  Modification to Susp pick up points relates (usually) means relocating them.  Rob Carvell got picked up on this on his scirocco racer in '04 if i remember.  Also you need to keep the rear wheel well, otherwise you need to run in super production or whatever they call similar classes.  Some organisers aren't too clued up on the polo and whats allowed, whats not - most think anything bar a cup car specific spec is out.

We did run without a ARB too originally with the subframe, but found it too stiff, sometimes say at Silverstone National Circuit, Boaksey was getting it on two wheels!  Also ran 450lb front, 500-600lb rears

Can't obviously say about the 750MC but the BRSCC was cool with it.

First time I've seen this thread Jez, very good! Nice neat job of the pressure switch.
Title: Re: Fresh from Andy Robinson
Post by: hayesey on January 25, 2010, 08:18:27 pm
hate to say it but it's not ideal having it above the throttle plate as it could see boost pressure there with the throttle closed meaning the ecu will add too much fuel in when this happens.  prob not a major issue as it'll only really happen for a brief period when you lift off the accelerator.

Pain in the arse come to mapping time.... your post throttle and pre throttle pressures will always differ, especially as Paul says when opening/closing the throttle.

Ideally you need it plumbed in next to (but not on) the same line as the MAP sensor- they will then correspond.
Title: Re: Fresh from Andy Robinson
Post by: Andy on January 25, 2010, 09:11:25 pm
Looks neat Jez, but Yoof and Hayesey do have a point.

More importantly, at closed throttle the ECU will see the idle/closed throttle switch active setting it to the overrun condition (i.e. fuel cut). But if your pressure (full-throttle) switch is also active, it'll be sending the full-throttle signal to the ECU too.

My guess is it may give the ECU the hump on the basis that it's seeing both open and closed throttle, and possibly log a fault with the throttle switches.

There might not be a plausibility diagnostic on the inputs though (Digifant's diagnostics are hardly what you'd call advanced!), and the open and closed throttle condition might be brief enough for it never to be an issue.

:) I do make myself laugh!! I didnt really give that any thought guys. Just thought, that will do the job. No problems though really, easy enough to weld the hole up and smooth it back!! I'll have another look at the 'body and put it in there somewhere.. back to the drawiing board as usual!! haha

needs to connect up to the inlet manifold plenum really, dont think there's anywhere convenient on the throttle body below the plate.
Title: Re: Fresh from Andy Robinson
Post by: jez1272gt on January 26, 2010, 05:35:37 pm
yeah found that out this afternoon - gonna pop it in the manifold somewhere around the plenum, on the side i guess! Where is yours exactly hayesey?
Title: Re: Fresh from Andy Robinson
Post by: hayesey on January 26, 2010, 07:30:01 pm
doesnt matter what side the whole plenum will get the same pressure, i think mine is teed into the pipe going from the bottom of the inlet to the aux air valve.  been a while since i looked at my car though so can hardly remember!

Lost motivation with it unfortunately. Bit tight for money at the moment also so not to keen on getting the last of the parts for it. Garage is a total mess! Generally a touchy subject with me at the moment  :( ! Thought about selling it off and trying to get some of the fortune i have spent on it back but i refuse to let it win. See what xmas and the new year brings i feel...

All projects go through ups and downs mate, and loads get put on hold at some point due to money/work/etc. I think the worst thing you can do is sell it during a lull, I reckon most people come to regret selling part builds that they've put a lot of time, effort, and money into. Stick at it.

I know that feeling! :(  Amazing how a polo folds in half without a roof and no cage, lol. :( :D  Biggest regret is binning mine, should have done a Nick Wilson (Dogwood) and rebuilt it over 6years, lol. :o 8)

G40motorsport at the moment I havent given it any more thought, although ultimately i would love to run it in a competitive field. The project is on hold due to money drying up which is down to job issues  ::) ... as soon as im earning properly again i will finish it off. hopefully for the summer but lets face it i have said it will be 'done' for the last 2-3yrs!!

Pettsy, dont do it, it will make you very poor!  :D
