Title: has anyone got any pics of oil pump fitted
Post by: g40chris on June 27, 2009, 10:05:47 pm
does anyone have any close up pics of a g40 oil pump fitted

i just wanna see if there should be a gap at the end of a pump as mine has a gap at the end of the diagonal pipe on side of pump, just where it joins the bottom end

Do you mean the two leg bracket that holds the oil pump to the block ? It has a slot so it can slide on the oil pump and allow for the adjustment of the chain drive.

i cant seem to find this slot on the oil pump

where abouts is the slot?

the gap between the diagonal pipe which goes up the left hand side of the pump and the bottom of the engine is about 2mm. there seems to be some play in the pulley with the chain on as the pulley rattles from side to side

can you take some pics of what you are talking about?  there shouldn't be any play in the pulley that I can remember.

cheers for the picture

as you look at the picture, just to the left of the pulley is a part of the pump which is at a 45 degree angle, im sure this is an oilway, there is a gap at the end of this where it joins to the engine. im sure this is where its losing pressure.

and the pulley moves about 2-3mm towards the pump

It's been a while since I changed the oil pump on my car but from what I remember the oilway goes through the silver plate on the side of the engine, you can actually see the pipe shape section on the left side in the picture.

Ahh, did you use new screws on the oil pump to mount it to the side of the block ? If so, you could well have used ones with a normal head on, that the end plate will stand off.

There's a gasket at that end too as you can see in Nick's pic. Check yours is there and hasn't got damaged.

i think the screws were the ones originally on the car

i have the gasket that goes between the block and the plate. its an open ended gasket iirc

right been a busy boy again tonight

took timing belt off with plastic plate, took both crank pulleys off so i could take metal plate off the side of engine by the oil pump, dropped oil again, took sump off yet again, there is a definate 2-3mm gap between the oil pump hole and the oil hole in the plate but no adjustment as the plate fits flush and the pump is fixed solid in place. there was no play in the pulley i must have imagined that.

my mate who was with me reckons that the oil pump must be cast and machined wrong as the plate is the original from the car from new. thing is i bought the oil pump from Pitstop developments 2-3 years ago when i was starting to rebuild my engine.

just uploading 2 crappy pics of the gap now

You're getting there mate. Just wondered if it's coincidence that the pump stands off it's correct position by a couple of mil and your thinking the pulley was able to move by that amount. If you're sure the pump is set up right then I reckon you should try and find another pump to compare with. If its not right then its not a corner you can afford to bodge.

is there supposed to be a gap in that area where there is a gap in the pictures

aint got another pump to match it against, but i will have to see if i can get my hands on one

There shouldn't be a gap. Looking at your pictures it looks like there's some sort of crud holding the mating faces apart. Have you hade the cover plate back off ? I see the shots were taken with the crank pulleys still on.

sorry about the poor quality pics

i have taken the plate off and the only thing between the plate and the engine is the gasket. just looks like crud in the pics

how much are the pumps from vw?

are GSF oil pumps as good as vw ones

the GSF pump is £65

when the vw one is £129

its only a standard polo pump isnt it.

has anyone used a GSF one or would buying that be like pissing in the wind

Are you sure that GSF Oil pumps are as good as VAG Oil pumps ? Have you seen them both ?

Because the last GSF one I saw was a cheap, nasty looking thing made in Brazil. In my opinion it's a false economy.

thats what i was told by pitstop so i bought the pitstop one and the pitstop one is crap and doesnt fit correctly

im looking for opinions if people have used GSF ones or VW ones.

i dont really have enough for any at the moment as i have been trowing money at the g40 and cant justify spending to much more, but if the GSF ones wont do the job then i will just have to save for a vw item instead.

I've only use VW ones ones and I wouldn't recommend any other.

Make sure you check you have the correct oil pump mounting screws.

i had a mate to bring over an old oil pump he had so i could check it against mine to see if there was any differences. noticed the problem straight away. where i have a gap, he had a rubber bush that sits in the 2 recesses to seal it. will be putting this back together tomorrow to find out if it works but im pretty sure this is the problem

Happy days again Chris; maybe best do another oil change though if there's been any metal to metal contact.
