Title: front and back bumpers
Post by: GAF2 on May 05, 2009, 02:51:45 pm
hi guys, want to half colour code my bumpers because am tired of trying to keep them black, got a guy at work that can spray them but i got to get them off and sand them back to get rid of the textured surface.  Just wondering is it an arse of a job to get them off?  Also any tips on getting the bumpers smooth or is it just a case of sanding, high build primer coat, sanding, another coat, sanding and so on and so on.

Cheers Grant

use high build primer to cover over texture.  Keep applying coats and sanding till you have a smooth finish.

My painter recommends starting with P240 or P320 and working your way up the grades making sure the textures gone at each stage. Then plastic adhesion promotor and a couple of coats of high build primer. if you just rough it up a bit and slap high build primer on, it might sink over time and you will notice the texture.

As above... you will need to take back the texture of the grain till you get a smoth surface. start with a fairly rough wet and dry to get the worst off, then move to a higher grade to get it nice and smooth, then use a high grade to get it super smooth.

Once the bumper is smooth clean and dry you will be able to primer it. you will need to use a a deadicated 'plastic' primer or use an additive you can get to allow the paint to flex when the plastic flexes otherwise you get crack'n'flake effect.

Flat off the primer, second coat  it and flat back again then take to your mate to paint. If hes any good then he will be able to take you through all of this step by step so you get a good job.

The finish is in the prep and trust me you need patience to prep well!

Hope this helps...
