Title: Short g40 driveshaft .. what diameter?
Post by: AdzCM on July 12, 2018, 11:37:19 am
Just wondering what diameter the short g40 driveshaft is? Is this the one that is usually uprated?

Mine is 27mm. Reason I ask is, I’ve had my polo over 8 years now (albeit, it hasn’t been used for 8 years) and I’ve been running around 200bhp for quite a while. Was 175bhp before that for a few years and circa 130 before that when running the glader. Touch wood, I haven’t snapped it yet. I do drive it hard quite often.

Diameter might not tell me anything. It could be a different metal or treated differently. Or it’s just standard and I’ve been lucky.

Or is it the thinner one with the balance weight that tends to snap? That seems more likely.

I don't know the specs, but here's a link to the group buy thread from a few years back. It has a bit of info on uprated shafts.

Link to the driveshafts on ETKA. No info on specs but you could look up the part number?

Cheers for that. Seems they uprate the longer driver side one. I’m just surprised mine hasn’t snapped with the power I have and the amount of stories I’ve read of snapped ones. Must rot in behind/either side of the balance weight.

Is yours turbo? From memory, the G-lader comes on sooner/ more aggressively than turbo conversions, whereas a turbo is much "softer" if that makes sense? Ultimately though, bad driving can kill stuff quicker, good driving can prolong it.

I've never been in a turbo Polo so can't really say either way, just parroting what I read somewhere.

Yeah it’s turbo. It’s definitely hella aggressive though lol. Spins into third. Maybe the spinning is saving the driveshafts. It’s hard to know. Majority of the time I only accelerate hard in second gear from a rolling start. On occasion, I do gun it from standing in first gear.

I was just curious to see if my driveshaft is uprated but I just did the cv boots and the splined end looks like the standard shaft in the link you sent me of that group buy.

Must keep an eye for an uprated one again just in case. Though they’re pretty rare.

Might be worth approaching a local engineering company, if it's a "project", i.e. you're not in a rush for it then someone might fancy doing it as a weekend / after hours job to learn, it might work out reasonably priced. Especially if they can then use the learning to bang a few more out and make easy money.
