Originally GT Coupe but now with G40 engine, gearbox & G lader supercharger
12 months MOT
Just rebuilt engine - head - gearbox - supercharger.
All new belts and water pump.
New Helix fast road clutch.
Brake overhaul inc performance discs on front.
Sound mechanicals throughout.

Offers in the region of £2500 considered.
Becoming increasingly rare so likely to appreciate in value - especially a basically sound and solid example!

What is the mileage of the car? What head and engine work have you had done? Why are you selling after you have just completed it? What’s the interior like and is there any rust? If so can I get some pics please. Thanks

188k on the shell
Head was a strip down and rebuild by http://www.fjpayne.com
Block was stripped cleaned skimmed glaze busted etc by same company and reconditioning parts kit supplied by them.. rings gaskets head bolts bearings seals etc fitted by me.
It's my son's car and he now has a Golf to work on hence selling this one.
Interior is fair but seats need reupholstering or replacing. Missing parcel shelf and boot linings.
Some rust bubbles on drivers door bottom. Few little surface spots but not major. Engine bay and engine support areas rust free.. sorted while engine out.
Gear box stripped cleaned inspected and reassembled by gearbox specialist. Same for supercharger too.

I could be wrong here but I definitely remember some people saying years ago (like, 10-15 years ago) that there were some G40's that don't say G40 on the logbook. Makes no odds to some people but other (purists) like having an original G40.
Take a copy of the chassis/VIN number to a VW dealer and they should be able to lookup and print out the original order/ similar stating what the car was originally.
Unless you know it was a GT originally, may be worth stating that (assuming you know for sure either way).

Been told the roof Ariel is a give away on non g40 cars as g40s had roof Ariel and other models don't. That's what I usually look for seems to be correct.

They can be retrofitted with a drill bit and half an hours work ;) Done a few myself on Golfs and Polos in the past. There's always a bung in the wing on a G40 too as they didn't press any "non aerial" wings, annoyingly. The dead giveaway is looking in the boot at the original factory sticker (generally inside the rear panel below the boot latch) it will state "PY" for the engine code. 3F is GT I think?

Ok... now confirmed by VW.. records show it started life as a POLO COUPE GT. It does now have PY code engine which I believe is G40!? What is the difference between the 2 shells?

I emailed the seller earlier in the week and once i became aware that it was an early car i advised that it was possibly a conversion. The owner was super nice and advised that he would look into it.
Having driven polos for 20 years and had an early gt and g40 looking at the colour of the car i would suspect its a GT. grey was a very unusual choice for non gt early models. Most early mk3 polos were either white or red, not many early grey ones.
Grey paint would have been quite costly and is one of the best colours for wither gt or g40.
The give always to tell a stock g40 would be the aerial and the vinyl around the rear number plate.
Although its a conversion at least its gone into an early gt in a nice colour. There cannot be many gts left on a h plate in grey.

Nothing. They're all the same. The only things to differentiate a G40 are bolt on;
10-15mm lower suspension
Steering damper (also fitted to GT's)
Bee-sting aerial, no wing aerial
Alloys
rear ARB (I think only the base models have no rear ARB)
Rose jointed lower control arms (there's a bearing at the inboard end of the arms rather than a bush) - G40 only.
"Le Mans" interior
Arch kit as standard (also available to other trim levels too)
That's about all I can think of. There will be more but most parts have been swapped 10000 times by now, original G40 or not. Looks like a nice car at a reasonable price. Good luck with the sale!

Yeah mine doesnt say G40 on the logbook and at one point thought it was a GT conversion. I managed to get a copy of the 1st registration from DVLA and it was registered with a PY code engine in June 1991.
...LOL just went to check registration month and id not realised that the copy of 1st registration actually says Model - Polo Coupe G40, Body Type - Coupe.
I think at the time all i was interested in was engine code to confirm if it was a original G40. Might have just forgot but im sure in the G40 register thread i used the engine code to confirm G40 and not the fact it was a G40 to confirm G40 LOL ::)
