Title: Wheel fitting problem - calipers?
Post by: G40_FUNK on April 13, 2008, 05:02:35 pm
Hi there

Ok, my G40 came with 14" Golf Clipper alloys.  I've now got a set of original BBS  13" alloys, but they wont fit.  It appears the calipers are far too big, resulting in there just isn't enough room.  Also the discs are ventilated - this wasn't standard was it?!

Can anyone tell me what i need to do.  I presume i will have to get smaller calipers and possible smaller standard discs?  Anyone know what i should be asking for/size of the parts.

Sorry for being such a novice :/

Chris

sounds like you've got 256mm discs and calipers fitted to me, get the tape measure out!

G40s come with 239mm vented discs as standard.  I'd keep the 256mm ones if you have them and get hold of some 14" BBS instead.

I have 13" BBS RAs did they do 14" RAs?  Also ive been told that the RAs must be 5J or they wont fit, i'm getting very confused >_<

I got some std calipers, discs and pads if you want to swap, I'll even do the swap for you if you like, and I'll chuck in a clean pair of pants for your drive home!!

Well if the alloys are the right type, and the disc and calipers are wrong i'll do you a straight swap yeah.  PM me your postcode.

14" BBS RAs were optional extras on mk2 golfs I think.

Sorry guys, my alloys arn't the G40 ones.  I presumed the BBS RA 13" were universal and fitted G40s.  Oh well, i will probably go with Steves 14" BBS.  I'll try and source a set of original G40 ones at some point.  I didn't realise they did 14" BBS RAs either.  '90 Spec' MK2 Golf GTIs came with 15" BBS RAs.  I'm learning about these Polos slowly lol.  Thank you all for your help.

Yes the discs did end up being the 256mm type and even the original G40 wheels won't fit.  I tried Steve's 14" alloys, but i think they look too big on the car.  I even tried a set of ATS cups 15", and they fitted!!!  I have come to the conclusion that its best to revert back to the standard set up and get a nice set of 13" BBS - again lol.
