Title: Alternator problems!! PLEASE HELP!!!
Post by: Merrick on October 06, 2014, 04:50:57 pm
Hi, the polo developed a new fault over the weekend after rebuilding the charger. Doesn't seem to be charging the battery properly :-s on the way to work this morning I noticed my lights going dim and the engine tried to cut out so I revved it a little and it kept going. This happened numerous times then the last time I did it my lights went bright all of a sudden and worked fine for about ten mins when I got to work. Got home from work and put a volt meter on then alternator terminals and the terminal which the large red wire goes to is producing below 1v and the thin blue wire is producing just over 14v. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Usual culprit is the voltage regulator. On the back of the alternator. Did u put the earth strap back on that's on the side?

I don't remember seeing one but there's one on the charger. Couldn't I just connect both wires together so it provides the correct voltage for charging the battery?

No the blue comes from the light on the clocks.

There is an earth strip going from the charger to the chassis. Did you connect that? If that is missing then you will definitely have charging problems. Its rather essential. Also check if your belts are tensioned correctly they might be slipping on low rpm if they are lose! I know mine did whenever water was getting to them giving me the same symptoms as what you describe.

Yeah all connectors are in the right places and so on :-( checked with volt meter again and the main terminal is only putting out 0.01v and the other terminal is around 12-13v
I have a cl as well sitting doing nothing, are they the same alternator?

I doubt they would build 2 different alternators! They are probably the same.
