Title: 'Falling' out of 5th
Post by: mark_crox on June 07, 2014, 05:16:28 pm
I've just been out on my first trip with my ATV box fitted with the LSD. I'm still running in my engine so not giving it much beans but when coasting it seems to just slide out of 5th. When under power or engine braking its fine (so far) and it seems to be worse coasting up hills. Almost like the weight of the gear leaver pulls it out of gear.

The box was inspected when the diff was fitted and was told everything looks fine. The other gears do seem ok but I was hoping that it was something to do with the shifter alignment.

Any idea what is causing it?

Mine did that and it was the gear linkage setting which caused it - once adjusted it was fine.

That's good to know. :)

Any advice on the best way to do it?

Trial and error was my method.

Check Haynes manual for setting gear linkage if you don't have one I'll post tomorrow when I'm with mine I remember it was set by someone holding the gear leaver at 11mm from reverse chatch to left side of housin and I think off the top of my head 43mm from top of housin to leaver

Cheers guys.
Yeah I've got a Haynes didn't know if there was a better way.

Will give it a go when I get the car back next week!

Check your gearbox oil level.

I had this problem when I drove up to Fort William in my old mk2. Topping the oil up to the correct level sorted it - it felt like a brand new box! Apparently fifth sits at the top so if the oil is low that's the first one to go.

Of course as you've just fitted the box it could be that the linkage needs adjusting.

to be honest I think there could be a bit too much in it. Will check when I get the car back and check the linkage. Hopefully its just this! :)

I've got a bit of a leak on the selector shaft bush as I think I caught the actual shaft when putting the engine in the car. I'm still messing with the linkage but its still falling out of gear.

Is there anything else that could be causing it?
