goes at the bottom of the gearlever under the car. Not had chance to fit one yet but am going to fit one to Samg40's car some time soon!

Pain to fit but lovely when done did mine the other day not from pete but same kit ;-)

You need to get pliers on the little pin that holds the ball in place I just put the one that come out of mine back in

So what's the symptoms of this failing? would my 80k mile g40 need changing?

they just go sloppy with age/miles/use.

Question regarding this: on my GT, the gearstick is sloppy in neutral, ie it doesn't feel spring-loaded.
Would this kit rectify the problem?

no - that's the spring in the box.
